Nothing to do with the quaint 'hybernation' trick....I didn't mention that at all.

This is about a cold boot and the sequence-change that gives the impression only that the boot has completed by showing the desktop/icons/etc sooner in the sequence.  When you see them the boot is still going.

When you see things such as Fences [and/or other third-party add-ons]  THAT is when the boot has completed....

Actually, neither!  MS has run several blogs regarding development and features, etc.... and thus far the experience of others seems to back up the articles I read.  And one would expect that when 10 retail is released, and all the improvements and features are nailed down, it will be even better.

The Supertalent Raid Drive II is capable of writing 3000MB/s and has and 2000MB/w reads, highly doubt that the system is still booting after 2 second - after i see the desktop and icons.( wait I cant see icons since Fences is still not working and requires a right click) but since im not blowing hot air i will actually test it with bootracer next time while at uni ( since i only have one license i´ll love to uninstall just to prove that )
I had a previous post that explained the issue into the last corner once an external is hooked Fences will not load.
I love Fences don’t get me wrong but with (2000MB/w read i mentioned it so one can see that it’s not the users OS causing the issue with that software) it is the software that needs some tweaks .

And while i wrote hibernation it is hybrid boot that is active as standard on win8. (Small files created and saved on disk so that it can boot up faster and has all the drivers incl. last kernel session)
If you want to compare a win8 cold boot with windows7 cold boot _ you can do that still windows8 will be a tad faster
Cold boot or full shutdown
Press WINkey+X choose shutdown (charms bar shutdown is using hybrid shutdown )

PS. When i see Fences, with an external drive hooked up my windows is done loading and could have loaded 2 more times.
Still it will require a right click to the desktop for fences to finally show so add 1 more time since clicking will take another second.

It's only 'like' those...when you discover one car on the list has been stripped prior to the test...

The difference between 7 and 8 is the SEQUENCE of service loading.  Both will have a shell load in that sequence.  When people see the shell loaded they assume the boot has finished....and that is because with 7 and all systems previous the shell was last...or near-to last.  The TRICK with 8 is the shell appears sooner in the process giving the impression [via historical assumption] that the OS has therefore finished loading services.

But it hasn't.

WHEN such proggies as Fences is seen to load is when the OS has finalized the services loading and can now allow extra software to initialize.

That happens at the same time...in BOTH 7 and 8 [and all previous].

When a shell-related program [such as much of Stardock's] is added to an OS it needs complicated ties with the shell [GUI] and services...and that cannot happen until the OS lets it...that is....when the OS FINISHES its boot.

On my system there are proggies that finally are up and running AFTER Fences....it's not even last on mine.  Often the last is Sysmetrix...

Hehe How funny this is.  Who really cares if it takes 20 seconds or 30 or even 1 minute.  I really can't see how important that is.  Oh, and last to load on my machine is Yahoo widgets.(W7)

I still use 'em, WOM.  Along with Hyperdesk on XP. IconX as well. And Right Click!

it even logs the time after you see the desktop ... even if windows8 is faking an early ready system - there is no way it will take longer than 1-2 second with the pci-e ssd i mentioned (there is no program that would take that much time to be ready for use) with a normal ssd ok but not with that card.


 

Apart from the real fact that boot times don't matter diddly-squat in a person's life in front of a computer...no matter when the desktop looks loaded or not...or at what stage of its load you see such creatures as Fences in that load...if you are talking about how long a program takes to load AFTER any/all booting is done...there certainly ARE programs that take longer than 1 or 2 seconds....try FSX for size.  Typical time to selection screen [not actually in-game yet] about 30 to a minute.  Select an aircraft ....perhaps 10 seconds....load....another 20 for scenery/time/etc.

Not 1 or 2 seconds....more like 1 or 2 minutes.

SSD...12 gig of triple channel...i7 920 ...GTX590.....

Results will vary....

I also use them... though I mostly went the Yahoo widget way for Steampunk themed stuff I couldn't get anywhere else.

As for the last thing to become active when my rig is booted up, well that'd be me.... but I was told that'd happen as I got older.

So why I have a Win 8.1 rig that boots in around 6 - 7 seconds with UEFI Ultra Fast Boot enabled, well it beats me.. not like the old days... don't even have time fer a pee once I push the button anymore, much less make a cuppa; make some toast, bacon and eggs; go fetch in the mail and ogle at the nice young lass sunbaking with not alot on next door [damn having to move away from there].

Yes, a couple of my early rigs took that long to boot up.

Starkers, I didn't count myself, just took it for granted that was a given.  I'am no good till after my second cup of coffee, just ask Hank.

My yahoo widgets include the clock, weather, nu jongg, cpu's, ram and HD.  Sure wish they hadn't stopped supporting them but sure glad I'd saved the engine and apps.

It takes me waaaa-aay longer than that before I'm semi-functional.... at leat a half dozen cuppas and about 3 trips to the toilet per cup.

Yes, I too am glad I kept my widgets and engine, but then I keep alot of programs/installers for just in case.

My FSX is around 200gig installed.  It's not a toy.  I have one aircraft that is 60gig [vers/paints/revisions]

You clearly miss the point even though you refer to it.  The 'faking' is the 'completed' desktop showing BEFORE all services are loaded to actually have it FUNCTION.

WHAT YOU SEE WITH THE WAIT FOR FENCES TO DISPLAY THE ICONS IS THE TIMING OF THE TRUE END OF THE BOOT PROCESS.

None of this is relevant to what HD you use.

The boot sequence is the same, whatever the drive it's on.

Please stop referring to 'Hybrid boot'....it is NOT relevant either.

Services loading changed between 8 [10] and all OS vers prior.   THAT is the SOLE REASON for the false assertion that 'Fences slowed my boot time'.

The problem IS the OS, not the app.  That is the point.

I can put my socks on really quickly.....but if I put shoes on too it takes longer.  Damn it....shoe manufacturers NEED TO make a way to put the shoes on concurrently with the socks...or even maybe provide a way to put the socks on AFTER the shoes....provided the socks don't then take longer.....cos having to wait for the socks to go on and only then put on the shoes is just bad design...and is simply the shoe maker's fault

Yes, it would be...but it isn't.

If the OS is still loading services NEEDED by the app the app will not run.   Too many people [or at least one here] cannot differentiate between an OS shell-integrated add-on and a free-standing executable such as Photoshop [your example].

If YOU PERSONALLY have a delay [with Fences loading]  because a USB 3 external drive has not initialized and been connected/logged/whatever by your OS Kernel....then you need to blame the OS kernel for not seeking/initializing external drives FIRST...or SOONER.

And that isn't a Fences issue at all.
