The Rating System

Wednesday, December 11, 2002 by JamMeister33 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Now, don't get me wrong, I am for the rating system; however, I think that once a person who has the privilege of being able to rate a skin has made a choice, they should not be able to go back and change it.

The rating system is being abused by malicious minded people who either have a grudge, or just get a twisted
pleasure out of having the power to negatively influence other people's hard work.

OK. Here's a dumb one. I just became Level 4 and I don't know where to see the ratings!

Davad70: I don't think you have been singled out. If you look at the skins you will see that those you mentioned don't comment a lot on skins period. As someone pointed out you shouldn't comment or rate unless you have tried the skin. Maybe they haven't tried your skin or a lot of other skinners skins. And yes, I agree with you, sometimes skins are rated high that are techinically flawed and have to be updated 1 or more times to fix them. I also agree with you on another point. Adni comments alot, one of the few old time skinners that does. I hope you don't mind me commenting on your comment as I'am not a skinner, just a user.

The ratings are right below whatever piece you look at. Make sure you cross reference your stardock account with Wincustomize, so that it will reflect your level.

Most of my comments are on LiteSTEP themes..as that is my 'interest'.
Also...with the plethora of skins we get to look at to 'moderate', it becomes VERY time-consuming to also comment on them as well.
It's more 'important' to spend a little time if possible explaining rejection emails rather than why we think a skin is a '10' or a '2' or whatever.
Liking a skin is 'relative'...rejecting one is an 'absolute', hence our focus.

What I personally find frustrating is that often I see things purely by chance....because the uploader can by-pass moderation.
I bet there are many works by people like Adni, BoXXi and treetog, to name just 3 that I have NOT seen.
It's not all that common that I get the time/chance to quietly browse through a section looking for the 'complete works of davad70' or who-ever....unless it is to police moronic commentary by the likes of Mister Sproat.

This is by no means a 'slight' or 'preferential treatment'...just a fact that Wizops spend quite a bit of their time maintaining peace and decorum on a site which has hundreds of thousands of members....many with personal issues, grief or aggro of one sort or another.

When I do get to comment it's often something short and simple...but again it's often due to a controversial piece attracting my attention, rather than a case of 'hey, davad70 has a new one....must look'.

PS, davad...I used you as an example only....

Actually to see ratings you must click on the comments to see and to rate.

To rate and or comment, you have to click on the comments. Just to see what the rating is, you need do nothing.

I assume rates are determined by d/loads. How many d/loads do u have to get to even get on top list ?

~No. Downloads are separate...ratings are given by level 4 users (I think) and Apprentices on up (I double that *I think*).

BTW...your latest wall is just wonderful! I downloaded it yesterday (and your current rating is a nine). But ratings are silly...and even relying on how many downloads can get silly too (people can cheat that like anything else I bet). But your work is exceptional and I look forward to seeing more! Keep up the good work and Happy HOLIDAYSSSSSSSSSS.

WOM>I wasn't implying that I was being singled out. Mainly just using that as an example of how things have changed. I don't comment on nearly as many skins as I used to either. I have a lot of reasons, just as I'm sure others have their reasons. Maybe this is just another cost that we're paying for the proliferation of skinning. A lot of those people I mentioned probably don't have time to use/comment/rate all the skins that they used to. We don't see nearly as many skins uploaded by treetog, alexandrie, mikeb as we used to. Why? I would imagine that they just don't have time. They're too busy doing skins for hire. I'm definitely not faulting them for that, I did a skin for Jeff myself. There's no right or wrong involved, just an observation on the current state of skinning.

On another note....I personally don't have any problems with people commenting on skins based on the screenshot. I'll freely admit that several times I've looked at a screenshot, seen it's not totally my cup of tea, and commented something like...."I really like the texture you used for the toolback". But I agree that we should definitely download and apply skins before rating them. I'll also admit that I've done this before, but not very often.

Davad70: I agree. Sometimes it takes an hour just to look at the new stuff that went up in one day for 3-4 catagories. That doesn't include download and try out time. I have only been on this site 1 1/2 years and I seen the submission rate increase 10 fold. As Jafo stated, the Wizops are busy moderating and policing the messageboard with little time for anything else. As a non-skinner, I have the time to comment but I feel some people take my comments lightly as I don't create anything so they think I don't know what goes into creating what they make. Thats not so, as I know exactly what it takes to make a skin, wall, logon, icons, cursors winstyle and media player. Oh and a DX. The rest I don't so I don't comment on. By the way, haven't seen you on the message board in a while or a new skin.

No, I haven't been around much lately unfortunately. I work in retail, and I have very little time to do anything other than work between Halloween and Christmas. I have three skins that are almost done though, and will probably be uploading them after the holidays are over.
