Agrestik WIP

Thursday, July 17, 2014 by Kevin_Walter | Discussion: Sneak Previews

So it's been a few years since I've messed around with SKS or WB. I did have a couple of themes up on here and my DevianArt page several years ago (don't go looking, they're not there...), but I dropped out of contact on this site for a long time.

At any rate, none of that is important. Here's a small bit of something I've been working on for the last couple of days. Still a lot of work to do on it. The current plan is to also release an IconPackager theme and MAYBE an Objectdock. Though I know nothing about skinning the latter of those.

Thoughts?

Looks good! I like it.

Seems to me I've seen a similar start button (the 4 diamonds) in "Noir For 7" by Tom Richter, but not an identical one.

I'm sure you could put up a request to do an OD background and/or an IP...and get folks to join you in a project.

I'm not surprised... it's a pretty basic shape.

Though I've viewed pretty much everything made by Tom Richter, so maybe that's just an idea that stuck in the back of my brain. Diamonds are a bit of a running theme in this skin though.

I wasn't suggesting you having copied it...not at all, and I do agree that it's a pretty basic shape.

Actually, it could be the basis for some cool animations (the diamonds moving, or the skin's colors moving 'behind' the diamonds) if you were of a mind. Tom is a fave skinner of mine. He has a new family (birth of a child a few months ago) so his skinning has pretty much dropped off...understandable, though. I am a fan of his, as well.

Again, go for it! I like the theme' minimalism and the colors as well.

Also...welcome back! (remiss of me not saying that earlier).

No no... I was just thinking aloud, so to speak. It's one of those things that itches at you... "where did I think of this?"

But yes, I agree. Tom Richter made some pretty awesome skins back in the day. Hopefully he'll find time to whip out another one sometime.

Also, I know nothing about animating skins. I know it's possible, I've just never really played with it. Maybe some day. I don't think it's happening with this one though...

Maybe! We'll see how it goes. I mean, I may as well learn, right?

If you're really interested in learning OD backgrounds, THE person to approach would be WebGizmos.

His health has been a bit shaky recently, but I think he'd receive any request graciously.

Yup. Web is the Master Dock maker.

Someone say diamonds? Well I have a WB 50% complete that has a diamond start button and other buttons also. I like it so it's a (keeper for me) or maybe not.

Thanks for the comments.

Here's another screenshot. Windows seem to be (mostly) completed!

Hooray for full sized screenshots! Nearing completion now. Though I don't think I'll release this until I get the Icon Package mostly finished.

I would download that! It also looks like a a skin that wouldn't look like crap on windows 8 (which is hard to do as windows 8 will be the death of WB skinning if they can't find a way to skin ALL the elements in the UI)

Thanks!

I have no idea how well this would hold up in Windows 8, as I don't have Windows 8 nor WB8.

If you wanted to send it to me for testing on windows 8.1, I could give it a whirl for you (and send back screenshots).

Contact me by PM for my email addy if you're interested.

I figured I would bump this, since I've finally gotten around to working on it some more. This screenshot doesn't show much that hasn't been seen already, with the exception of some new icons.

I'm not sure if I care for how the folders look, and I'm definitely going to change the Desktop icon. There are also a whole bunch of icons I still haven't done in the package, though I did get a lot of the Control Panel icons finished up today.

The Blind itself is pretty well finished. It's going to be released for Windows 7, and Lightstar mentioned back when I was first working on this that he would help make the few changes it would need to work with Windows 8, since I don't run that OS. If somebody else wants to help me test the blind, let me know.

I won't be releasing the blind until the entire Icon package is finished to go along with it though, and I just started working on it again a couple days ago, so it's going to be a while yet.

I've actually designed probably a couple dozen WindowBlinds in my day, though none of them were ever truly finished. I usually got to around 50% with them and then either hated my work, or got stuck with an issue I couldn't circumvent and just gave up on them, so they were never released. So hopefully this will be the first of many... and hopefully Windows 10 will be a little easier to skin than 8.

You can count on me Kevin to do the Windows 8/8.1 sub-style for you, no problem. Looking great!

Lightstar knows Windowblinds in and out. I also have made many. Tom is your man for win 8 and 7 for that matter. Really not much difference to make it work on win8. If you want another set of eyes to check win 7 just PM me with your email address so I can send you mine. That way you can send me the WB to look over. But if you are going to send it to Tom to check win8 I'm sure he will be looking it over in 7 also.

Time not to give up anymore.

Docks are quite straight forward once you start looking at them, trial and error works well working out what is the way to set up dock as you want it to look, image is one of my tab docks with a couple of notes on it as pointers to how it works, hope you find it useful.

Well, I'm almost finished with the icon package. Or at least, as much of it as I'm willing to spend time completing. I'm not all that great at making icons anyway. I have the folders, the main categories of the control panel, the drives, and desktop icons finished. All that's really left is to make icons for the most common file types you might encounter.

With the icons so close to completion, I decided to go ahead and upload the blind. Hopefully it is approved for the gallery sometime soon.

Here is another preview of the skin. Not much has changed, but this is basically what can be expected.

Once it's readily available, I would be interested in seeing some screenshots of it in action on Windows 8 and possibly Windows 10 machines.
