Rating Trolling
Friday, July 11, 2014 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
I was made aware today (again) of someone rating trolling as I call it. This is where someone is purposely giving a skin a "1" rating to bring down the ratings. We (the moderators and admins) have been doing this long enough to know what a fair and reasonable rating is, and even giving leeway to that it's easy to see where someone is just doing to harm a skin rating.
The surprising part is this is done by people who have been here for years and are ranking members of the site.
Ratings have always been a touchy subject, but there comes a point where the actions of one member to clearly harm another members skin is something we won't tolerate. As an example, we deleted over 30 "1" ratings made by one person on competing skins in the same category.
From here on I will demote any member regardless of their current ranking who is doing this in a clearly malicious manner.

I don't believe that any skin gets a higher rating than 3 stars. Any skin I upload gets automatically 3 stars and it's up to users to rate it up or down. The only exception would be masterskins which if memory serves get an auto 5 stars.
or how some of us see these as 3 stars being 6 and 5 stars being 10, since the star ratings have half star increments. I can see how I was confused by the DT comments if he's saying 3 stars. I had to look at his gallery and only saw one low rating for a wall way back when, which got me more confused.
Myself, I have no issue starting out with 6 (3) stars. If they go up, great and if they go down, bummer.
Although when I re-uploaded some deleted blinds they came back in with 5 (2 1/2) stars instead of the usual 6 (3) that they originally came in with. Must have lost a 1/2 star for the mods having to look at them twice, who knows.
Although I think it's not a good thing to leave on a down note but if you got to go, then see ya.
neither a co-dependent nor enabler be, my Uncle Bob used to say.

Exactly.

I've had a close look at your skins and my honest opinion as a skinner is that 3 stars is being generous.
Sorry, I'm not known for my subtlety ![]()

as one or two star rated skins don't seem to exist, three stars means crap and four means mediocre. ![]()

It's why I have no friends....
You too eh? Weird......hehe
Of course but I wouldn't call it 'pleasurable' unless the subject had an especially aesthetically pleasing backside!
<monk quickly slinks back into his corner and hopes he gets away with a bit of thread/post 'trolling'>

has there been a single Windowblinds skin buried in the personal pages in recent years?
Yep, but I cannot remember which or by who they were made.
thanks for the answer. this seems to be very rare though, i'd guess the forum would be full of complaints if this would happen regularly.
i still think the scale goes from 3 to 5.

people download based on the preview...Do you buy a car from just looking at it? Think not, you test drive it.
Absolutely agree. That's why I think that rating and commenting should be enabled only for those who download the skin.
Now that the hub-bub has died down some, I would like to agree with these statements to a degree. I just downloaded a skin that I rated pretty high only to find out the UIS2 frames, tool windows and button highlights/shadows were not skinned. While the skin is pretty it's unusable for the applications that I use.

That's why it's necessary...depending on the skinnable's complexity...to actually test it. Top of that list has always been Shell enhancements/replacements [including Windowblinds]. Bottom of that list is actually Wallpapers....as they do nothing other than 'sit there looking pretty'.
Any compound skin...with functions/animations/different states of interaction...ie a GUI can only be correctly evaluated by use.
It is why Wallpapers are only an addendum to skinning, and not skinning per se ...![]()

I admit i did already rated a skin without downloading it, by simply judging them by the screenshot, many skinners already include active unactive frames they display the startmenu show mouseover effects and such in it and sometimes they even show the calculator and notification the only thing i would miss out would be the please wait animation or startmenu animation frame animation and sounds) but normaly if a skin is animated i download it, but if there is no animation there only can be functionality issues but if nobody complained about problems at stagering 1200+ download things should be ok.

A lot of people say ...oh what a great looking skin. I give it
Most are looking at the preview and once that starts most just join the crowd. Damn few ever say if they found something wrong, they will PM the person so he can fix it, that way they don't put a blemish on the skin and piss the maker off. Egos are big.

Im certainly not the guy that keeps his mouth shut when i tend to find something problematic in fact i personal messaged some GUI competetors the last time about some stuff i found... before the rating started.
I just think that when you see a skin and follow it up on a WIP topic you can judge the design by itself if the screenshot provides enough information about the skin menus and stuff in the end the only thing that remains open is if the skin does work as promised but usualy people tend to write if things do not work rather than making a rating.

Must say, I may complain a LOT about the Master Skinner's pricing their products beyond $.99 , I don't mess with ratings. I may have only rated a skin once or twice but it was only because I liked it. Master Skinners can only judge their ratings from a buyer who thinks the product is worth the buy already. So those ratings are in essence paid ratings. Not really fair to judge those against any but other Master skins. It's a shame when the majority of the skins of a given product are flooded with large price tags. Kind of cheapens the Stardock product value.

No, it doesn't. But really, we know your views on pricing, leave the poor horse alone.

Wow - I read through the thread because I thought it was new. Just more of the same old b.s. about skin ratings. I do agree with demoting and/or banning anyone who is obviously abusing the system. I usually don't rate anything that I have not downloaded, and have bit my tongue a few times to just not say anything (i.e. if you can't say something nice.....).

only because you never listen, absorb and comprehend the explanations given to you as to why your idea does not translate to windowblind sales....
you are like a broken record on a loop....
So those ratings are in essence paid ratings.
No, they're not paid ratings... they are ratings from people who have paid... there's a dif...

My just submitted skins deserved better than a three star rating. If they had been made by your favorite friends, ratings would have been better.

Gee wiz how old are you anyway........
