Winamp 3 Is Excellent!

Monday, December 2, 2002 by bmetelsky | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Oh my God! I used to use winamp years ago, then went through a stage of trying just about any skinnable player, always going back to winamp up to 2.0. I switched to WMP after installing Windows XP and haven't really found the need to mess around with the others. I was browsing over at another site and saw a WA 3 skin on the front page called "MMD 3" and just had to install WA 3 to check it out. It has some excellent skins (some of them at this site) and has been behaving well on my machine. I know I will now use WMP and WA3 - can't give up WMP because of the excellent skins found here and it's CD recording capabilities. It might be tempting, though, if there were recording features that rivaled the ease of that built into WMP.

Haven't updated from Winamp 2.81 yet, don't see the point...

Skinning for 3 is much more "free form" which means much more versatility. Check out some of the skins available at wwwdeskmod.com. Like I said, I probably wouldn't have downloaded WA3 myself, except for the stunning skin "MMD3".

Yeah, MMD3 is amazing and highly usable. And the video features of WA3 are very good. I rarely use WMP anymore these days...

I guess the only reason that I haven't gone to Winamp 3 fully yet is because of its incompatibility with Winamp 2 skins (mainly Logika and UniverseMetal). Older skins don't skin the Winamp Thinger, so I prefer to stick with 2.81.

I think you can get a plugin that converts Winamp 2 skins into Winamp 3 skins. Don't know where it is but I'm guessing if it does exist then you can find it at the winamp web site.

I use WMP to convert my mp3 files into the microsoft format, I then play the files on Winamp 2.

I have Winamp 3, but don't use it for music because it crashes any time I try to play winamp radio on it. I do use it for videos though, not because it's the best quality, but because it plays nice with my system unlike Quicktime and Real.

I started using WA3 again solely for using MMD3. It's an awesome skin.

Mwah, haven't played with this skin yet, but it doesn't look very thrilling to me. Then again, only way to find out is to download and poke around.

WinAmp3 though is everything one could wish for skinwise: 1) layers, 2) alpha channels, and 3) scripting. Precisely how I would've described my perfect skin format years ago. Now if only the documentation was better...

I think that WinAmp 3 is a little to bulky. I was fine with WinAmp 2. Despite what most people think, I happen to think that new is not ALWAYS better.

David, most of the comments I've read about winamp around the web basically say that most people are sticking with winamp 2.

It depends on what you want. I like the options offered in version 3. I do believe it is still beta, though.

MMD 3 will get most people trying winamp 3. Hell i even had to take a look and i'm a devout Windows Media Man. That's not to say i dont use winamp 2 occasionally, because i do depending on the theme at the time. 95% of the time now i use our skins.

Windows Media Player except for the lack of alpha on the outside borders has everything a skinner would or could ask for at the present time.
