Opinion of Spyware

Sunday, December 1, 2002 by SuperheroCanadian | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

im doing a paper on adware for one of my classes and am just curious what the public opinion on it is, good bad, hated, not so hated.

As most people know adware also known as spyware to many sends out information from ur computer to other companys who produce ads and tell what type they should make pop up on ur computer. Many people hate this but its also the way they keep free programs free, i am just curious what the public opinion is around here

I totally agree with you Jobe...

Jam..... Adware, is not ad banners on sites, it is software that you use for free, but has ads in the app. I won't use most of it, but sometimes I will. Eudora has an Adware version of thier email client......... it is fully functional, and has a tiny ad running that is easy to ignore, and you can move it to any spot within the app you wish. That's good adware. Bad adware is ICQ, with huge and gaudy ads, but luckily ICQ Plus blocks the ads.

An example of Adware that I like: Opera
They also offer a paid version w/out the ad.

Besides, I long since stopped seeing ads, they're there, I just don't notice them unless they jiggle like that annoying one on WC when you don't log in.

I agree with Jobeleca. Opera is a prime example of adware that I don't mind at all. Programs or applications that use advertisements to help offset the costs of producing them are fine by me. That being said though, I absolutely cannot stand spy-ware. I run Ad-Aware on a fairly frequent basis to make sure that my system is free of it.

Jam... Koasati basically explained it for me, Adware is software with ads in it. Nothing to do with any ads found on websites
