Carefull with Recent windows 8.1 updates (solved)
Friday, June 13, 2014 by benmanns | Discussion: Personal Computing
It seems that the issue was caused by a corrupt download of an update...
I have my pc setup with auto updates since i thought that would be smart.
This morning my pc was rebooted stating that updates had to be installed.
Great...waited for them to finish my pc fans went off and everything seemed fine.
After getting home from Uni my PC booted, i saw the login screen and entered my password and then i had the great "Black screen".
My mouse cursor was working but nothing happened.
I was able to open the task manager but as soon as i came near it with the cursor it closed itself.
I solved it by resetting my PC to yesterday, but now my AV is cranky, i currently surf the web without any AV because of a damn windows update that wasn’t tested properly.
Step your Game up MS-Team or hire someone that actually knows how to do it right.

YEs Neil i did...well at least Object desktop Manager shows as installed "8.05" but the windowblinds info on the taskbar shows version 8.04(025x64)
Im pretty certain it wasnt caused by any Stardock product
since i only went one day back on recovery and everything runs good good again.

Running Windows 8.1 64-bit here benmanns, and using WB 8.05, installed the updates and and no issues at all.

LightStar thanks im still trying to figure out the cause... i know that some do not face equal problems while updating
But this smells like a faulty update...
I rarely install new progs and if i do i restart my rig afterwards to see if there are any problems.
The only thing that was done in this case is a windows update and that twisted my OS.

I think you need to uninstall WB, reboot and reinstall it.
As the version should be showing 8.05/8.06. Anything older and there is an optional Windows update which will trigger the issue you had.
Also which AV app are you using as something blocked the files being replaced.

Assuming that's after a reboot with WB having never been run at all since that would be unexpected. It may be you are seeing something different.

No Norton was not the problem in this case Wizard since the Norton rep shows trusted
In some cases Norton is carefull but hasn't been on MS updates
Even though many do not think highly of it, times have changed and Norton is usable again and offers good protection.
If it wouldn't i would run a free solution.

So good to see the problem solved. I know it can be very frustrating when all we do is updates for Windows and things go wrong. In most cases the fix is an easy one.

I had the same symptoms after installing Windows Update KB2955164. I was going nuts trying to figure out the problem. I thought I had a currupt user account and deleted it (there are multiple users (family) on this computer) then set up my account all over again. The update from Microsoft installed again and had the same problem. Glad I stumbled upon this thread or wouldn't have even thought about Windowblinds being the culprit. Thanks Neil!

If it turns out that it isn't WB try deleting the software distribution folder in C:/Windows this will allow you to download the update once again
This helped me... PS thanks LightStar i just hate it if stuff like that happens

The irony on that

It was definitely Windowblinds in my case. Updating Windowblinds and then installing the Windows Update again worked like a charm.

Was WindowBlinds not prompting you before for updates?

Are you running WindowBlinds?
If so did you update to WB 8.05 last month?
