Strange icon problem in XP (HD 2 has CD-ROM icon)

After a fresh install of XP (+ SP1) on a new machine and setting up a 2nd enhanced partition with logical drive D: the new drive shows up with a cd-rom icon. I installed Icon packager to see if it can change that, but I get the same result, even after restoring the icon cache and restoring default windows icons. Harddrive D: shows still up with the cd-rom icon. Did anyone have such a problem before ? Any solution ? One more info : The drive is connecte to a Promise RAID controller.

Hmm, there is one DVD-ROM and a burner as drive H: and I:, so restrictions can't be the problem. Maybe I confused the machine by having the DVD-ROM as D: and the burner as E: and then assigning other letters to them before creating the second partition of the HD ? I have to look if I find something in the registry...

In XP you can assign letters to the drives quite easily...via the 'Computer Management'
Try adjusting things there.
My setup is [with all physical drives and no separated partitions]
C HD boot OS NTFS
D HD Fat32
E Zip
F Burner
G DVD
H HD backup NTFS...

Using the Computer managemant is exactly what I did. I have done the same procedure on the machines at work and my private machines dozens of times. (2k & XP). Only this machine (of a friend) does behave the way I described. Even when I assign another letter, reboot and re-assign D:, the cd-rom icon is there again...

I guess I should load Explorer more often as my shell....I don't even use it as a file manager...

Yes, it's fully accessable. I have to do some more checks at home, I am at work right now. Thanks for Your kind help so far !

I'd guess you have restricted the available letters for the drives in Computer Management.
I know that XP likes to keep control of the icons for the CD-roms....I think that's to do with the built-in burning software...
