Questions about online backups.

Since I can't access my external drive I need a way to backup my hard drive. Is there an online backup that's free? I ask because I googled it and found one called Mozy. It says there is a free version and there exists one larger, probably the paid one. Does anyone know if its reliable or if there is one out there that is.

My flash drives, usb2, are horribly slow to write to. Wouldn't want to do much with them. You may end up wishing you'd just put the $10 or $20 on the new hd case.

Something like this will probably work well for you with that existing HDD you have Ross:
or you can get what I got a little while ago that works perfectly, can even duplicate drives:
This is assuming you are using SATA II drives.

Jafo pointed out that a case may not be the best solution to the problem in fact the case may have caused it. I would again suggest looking at a Hard Drive Docking Station.
EDIT: LightStar has given you two suggestions, there are more.

I meant that flash drives are painfully slow and rather that spending money on one as a substantial backup solution I would instead apply those funds towards "the next solution", whatever that may be.

Ichecked out both links. Thanks LightStar. The first one is more than I have and the second one is for SATA II. Mine is just an ordinary SATA. I'm still considering the one I saw on newegg.

I believe they do SATA and SATA II Ross, backwards compatible.

I don't think the docking stations would really need a fan - they look like they're "open air". What you're trying to avoid is the light-bulb-in-a-box heat effect, avoid heat build up, move air across the drive. Nothing wrong with a good solid waft effect.
Don't know what to think about the Venus. I was thinking you're using a laptop (?) but if you can use the pci-e card I guess that's fine. I'm also not quite sold on the way they're moving air - seems like a bunch of air across one side and not accomplishing much, but I really can't tell. Picture here:

Honestly I think I'd look at something else, especially for that price. Think "Air moving across and around the drive and circuit board, in one side or end and out the other." It may be doing a better job of clearing out heat than what I'm seeing, like I said it's hard to tell.
Next time I get an external I may get one of the docks these guys are talking about. The drive exposure might be a a little problematic in my environment but I could make a roomy plastic screen enclosure for it or something.

Okay Uvah, I know what I've said in my other replies but I decided to take another look at enclosures. I have changed somewhat. If you only have one or two HD's then I think a docking station may work better. If you have more then that say at least four drives then an enclosure with a good fan and ventilation may be better suited.
We all learn things by coming to the forums and reading what problems folks are having or other things they are looking at doing.

I run a SATA to USB docking station with two 1TB drives running and like John said, it is open air and provides for quick drive switching and if you get the right one drive duplicating/data transfer too. It does not get that hot at all, and should really fit your needs Ross. It is the one in the second link I provided in my first reply. I really believe that would be better for you, but it's all up to you of course.

You don't need a fan with them....that's the whole point. Their versatility....the potential to hot-swap several drives with the one unit....AND no fan/mechanical failure means they are the way to go. Mine certainly works just fine...

A SSD would be recommended.
SSD's are beyond my reach right now. I'm thinking a flash drive right now. Much more readily available until I get a new enclosure.
