Is there a good guide that let's a newbie that's interested in customizing her computer get started?

I have Windows 8. I spend most of my day in Microsoft Office.

There may be a guide but I don't know of any. My suggestion to you is to spend a little time on Wincustomize and look at various software that will allow you to do what you want. Wincustomize in my opinion is the best customization site on the planet. They (Stardock) offers every software imaginable for customization, some of which is free but some software you will need to purchase. There are also a lot of very helpful people here that will not mind offering you suggestions and even help. Feel free to pm me any specific questions you may have. Good luck with all your customization endeavours.

I'll tell you in advance, most customization software doesn't play well with MS Office software. Meaning you can't really skin or add theme to MS Office software.

There is a guide somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.
