I once had 1600x1200 on a 14"....it 'worked' but I looked a dork with my magnifying glass...

Strangely, the monitor 'handled' it without spitting a dummy.....then, again, it WAS the one that died mysteriously without warning about 2 years later....

14" = 640x480 or 800x600
15" = 800x600 or 1024x768
17" = 1224x768 or 1280x1024
The craziest thing I've seen was one person who has 1600x1280 on a 14" monitor. You had to go on a pixel hunt just to find the start button
Though on a 17" monitor that resolution is comfortable

Unchecking the 'hide modes' is not a great idea.
