I'm Tired of this Password Thing

Saturday, September 14, 2013 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Personal Computing

I hate passwords which expire. This is why.

Sorry your password has expired- you must register a new one.

Did anyone discover that password and hack my computer?

No, but your password has expired- you must get a new one.

Why do I need a new one since that one seems to be working pretty well?

Well, you must get a new one as they automatically expire every 30 days.

Can I use the old one and just re-register it?

No, you must get a new one.

I don't want a new one since that is one more thing for me to remember.

Sorry, you must get a new one.

OK, roses.

Sorry you must use more letters.

OK, pretty roses

No good, you must use at least one numerical space.

OK, 1 pretty rose

Sorry, you cannot use blank spaces.

OK, 1prettyrose

Sorry, you must use additional spaces.

OK, 1fuckingprettyrose

Sorry, you must use at least one capital letter.

OK, 1FUCKINGprettyrose

Sorry, you cannot use more than one capital letter in a row.

OK, 1Fuckingprettyrose

Sorry, you cannot use that password as you must use additional letters.

OK,  1FUCKINGprettyroseshovedupyourassifyoudon'tgivemeaccessrightfuckingnow

Sorry, you cannot use that password as it is already being used

Sounds like one of the password protected places I use and you have to change it every 60 days!

The military is like that, with worse requirements.  Leads to folks either writing it down, or forgetting it and using a reset every time.

Know exactly Howe you feel. Have to keep track of 8 passwords at the office and they all have different password expiry durations. Frustrating is an understatement. With two of them, I just have help desk reset my password for me when I requiraces chess. They complain to me...and I complain right back. Since the work needs to get done, they have to give me a password or they are impeding progress. It's fun...

The head of the software department for which I worked once required all software engineers to change our passwords. If we did not, she would forcibly change our password to "somethinglongandobnoxious".

My favourite is the weekly "we disabled your account because someone from china tried to guess your password" e-mail from paypal or google.

I'ma just throw this out there, but wouldn't it make more sense to change my account name instead?

sounds like my hotmail account.Try to log in too many times in an hour and get locked out. Then, go to hotmail site, log in, never works, reset password, never works, have them send a text to phone with a code, get code, log in, reset password, go to mail.spend an hour waiting for pages to load. No sweat.

Thanks for the laugh Doc.

haha good one... i came this far that i use a excel sheet on a portable usb drive for my passwords
that Excel sheet has notes how a password has to look like like you described 8 letters one numeric and capital included no spaces and no extra signs like "*|#whatever
I have about four sites i visit where the password needs to be changed every 2 weeks... This can be very annoying, but it also does make you feel protected... i know a single site that does all the above but uses an authentificator aswell. The changing process isnt that bad what i hate is sitting and waiting for the email to arrive in your mailbox. This sometimes takes ages for whatever reason.

Personally I think it's better for a human to remember an obnoxiously long password rather than change to a short but easily-crunchable one every couple of weeks.  After months of use, it is much easier to recall.

On the down side if anyone is listening to my thoughts then I'm like a goddamn password broadcaster.

Well there are online options like LastPass (which admittedly have had some problems which I think have been fixed up), and a home program called KeePass where you store your passwords on your home computer in a (somewhat) encrypted form.  I know that LastPass uses a master password, I think KeePass uses one too.
