SkinStudio 8 (7.9X beta) Issues and Recommendations Thread

Friday, May 24, 2013 by LightStar | Discussion: OS Customization

OK, the 7/8 fonts section does not work at all in Windows 7 or 8 in a LOT of skins, cannot even reset the area to default fonts.

What the heck is this "Old close button" addition in the Tree/Tooltips area? It says it's for IE7?  IE7 is ancient.

How about including images in the help section of new (and even some old) items and a better explanation of what the image does?

Sure would have been nice if you would have made the new SkinStudio pinnable to the taskbar too.

Which settings?

I see the taskbar button sections for horz and vert taskbars here.

You should remember some older unused sections (AKA XP only) have been removed from SKS.

I think he means quicklaunch buttons

They are still used for toolbar arrow mouseover.

Quicklaunch and pinned app settings are only shown in tree mode view. The are omitted from the section based view.

Well that's downright ridiculous, I don't use tree mode. Hope they put it back into Section Based view.

I never use tree mode either. It's ironic, though. Remember going over from sks 5 to sks 6? That was one of the things us skinners were adamant about....."we NEED to have the tree mode back" (it wasn't in the first betas of sks 6). I did use it in the very start but gradually stopped.

Still kinda miss the click-able preview from sks 5, though.

Hey Neil, can these items be put back in the Section Based view please?

The latest release of SKS8 keeps crashing a lot on Windows 8. I am in the middle of checking a skin out for issues, and 7 times now (yesterday and today), SKS8 crashes and gives you a dialog that saying so and that the application will close and Windows 8 will tell me what happened, but nothing comes up at all. This problem is not occurring on Windows 7.

Tom...SD has a utility to collect a log file for you to send to Support. Pm Zu (or write to Support). I think you'll get an answer faster that way.

Ok, can someone fix this quickly please. The left and right text margins on the taskbar buttons don't work, no matter what you set them at nothing happens. This occurs with SKS8 and WB8 on Windows 7, SKS8 and WB8 on Windows 8, or even SKS7 and WB7 on Windows 7.

Also, the text color selections on the vertical taskbar buttons do not set correctly, for instance setting the disabled text color actually changes the normal text color, changing the pressed color actually changes the mouseover color, etc., etc. This has been happening for years even on SKS7.

Also, the toolbar buttons text colors are also messed up in the same way and need fixed.

These issues occur on all skins, not just one or two.

Might be a really good idea if someone went through SKS with a fine tooth comb, checking every aspect of the application for accuracy while building an actual skin to make sure everything works as it is supposed to and not rely strictly on user input/reporting.

It's been that way since SKS/WB7

Yeah, I know ... I am just trying to get it fixed.  I can't do quality skins with settings not working correctly and having to figure out "what does what " when "what does what" does not do "what" it is supposed to do.

I can absolutely agree with Tom. It´s very frustrating trying to skin some special stuff when the settings act in a way they´re not supposed to and affecting other parts in one way, then when changing that part to compensate something else happens to the previous part or something... etc, etc etc...

Ooooook, here's another good one for you.  I just finished a skin in Windows 7 using SKS8 and WB8 (latest versions of both). I create a sub-style in SubStyle Management telling it to use the existing skin as a basis, switch to the new sub-style... and guess what?  All preview images inside SKS8 do not show up (only the text in the preview areas).  The text for an item on the left, lets say the start menu top image for instance, has the drop down list saying that there is no image assigned, yet there is an entry line for it in the code for the item. This occurs in every single item throughout the new sub-style.

So I decide to go back to SKS7 and WB7 and guess what, you cannot open a skin created with SKS8 in SKS7 without the exact same issues occurring, no preview images, code all screwed up, you name it.

Gee, now I cannot create sub-styles either!

EDIT:  All of these same issues occur on Windows 8 also.

Major bump! With all these issues going on with SKS its a real bummer for me. I'd like to play in there but if it doesn't work as it should what's the point.
