SkinStudio 8 (7.9X beta) Issues and Recommendations Thread

Friday, May 24, 2013 by LightStar | Discussion: OS Customization

OK, the 7/8 fonts section does not work at all in Windows 7 or 8 in a LOT of skins, cannot even reset the area to default fonts.

What the heck is this "Old close button" addition in the Tree/Tooltips area? It says it's for IE7?  IE7 is ancient.

How about including images in the help section of new (and even some old) items and a better explanation of what the image does?

Sure would have been nice if you would have made the new SkinStudio pinnable to the taskbar too.

SKS 7.95 does not run on my Windows 7 at all, nothing happens when I click the executable.  The prior release did run on Windows 7.  Also, why would it show up as an upgrade in SDC and then install itself to a different location than where SKS 7.3 was installed to?

Have you tried finding the exe and directly running it?

Of course, same results Neil. It works fine on Windows 8 though, just Windows 7 is having the issue.

I have a problem that if I change the show desktop button

under the task bar section it doesn't change it fully.

it is pulling the image from the Edit Controls section- Button image

In my experience the show desktop button should never be wider than 15 pixels for a single state. I find that a total canvas width of 45 pixels is pretty much the best you can have without weird distortion happening. Try side by side states rather than stacked too.

An example of one of my typical show desktop button:

SkinStudio is missing the section for the classic progress bar, aka the [Progress] section.  When creating my skin, I had to manually add the section in Notepad.

Why are you trying to add that section?  It is obsolete and has been for a very long time.

the problem is that when I press the show desktop button it show a different image than what it should

The show desktop section is build up with "three images" if you use one and dont change the value it will take parts of the skin you are building your skin on.
there should be also a box that says "image count 3" ( look at the screenshot )

ALso make sure that the alpha channel is premultiplied is - not checked

Then go under extra tab and set " blend against taskbar " to enabled ( if the image has transparency )

Edit: in Windows8 you will only see it if you click it ( normal and mouseover do nothing )

The "edit in SKS" button in WB Config opens a web page to download SKS.

The "edit in SKS" button in WB Config opens a web page to download SKS.

That is because the path to SKS is set wrong in WB8 Jim. SKS8 installs to a different location than SKS7 did. I have no idea why they did that though, SKS8 lists as an upgrade, yet it installs to an incorrect location.  For instance, because of font issues I have pointed out for when I try to change Windows 7/8 fonts, I had to install SKS7 and SKS8 on my Windows 8 in order for the SKS8 to work. But in WB8 when I click the Edit in SKS link, it launches SKS7 and not SKS8. Lots of issues to still work out.

Uninstall the build of SKS you have and install the latest version.  Those issues were resolved.

I have SKS 8.0 beta....."open this skin in skinstudio" does nothing (WindowBlinds 7.98 (014 - Windows 7 Edition) - 64 bit OS).

On W7 HP x64.

I wish WB 7.98 would open SKS like it used to. Now I have to search for it in the Start Menu. Also, I can't pin it to the task bar.

Well that kinda works. I pinned mspaint there and edited the target, label and icon. The icon on the taskbar never changed but it did open sks. I tried a log on log off and the shortcut was gone.

I did however work on pinning it to the startpanel.

Well here's a good question. Where did you put the settings for the task bar toolbar buttons (horizontal and vertical) and related settings at? They are no longer in SKS8, and now I have to put the old SKS back just to change them. Extremely disappointed, major oversight.

Which settings?

I see the taskbar button sections for horz and vert taskbars here.

You should remember some older unused sections (AKA XP only) have been removed from SKS.
