The last XP critical update takes two hours on a modem!

It comes with all kinds of warnings, and suggestions about backing up your system..... This is worrysome. Are they replacing the whole system? Couldn't they just send us all new CDs?

I got it all done in an 1:20, download and install. I did back up my data first which didn't take that long anyway. Day 2 with sp1 and so far so good. "Knock On Wood"

I downloaded the update and wondering what ISP only takes 2 hours via modem. Mine took about 9 hours to download. I have not had any trouble and while the download was happening I worked on a skin with multiple programs open.

The main critical update issue is easy to fix, with no download required. All you need to do is rename a file on your system.
Search for a file called "uplddrvinfo.htm", it should be somewhere in your Windows directory (C:\WINNT\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\System\DFS or C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\System\DFS) depending on how you named your Windows directory. Just rename the file and the security risk is fixed.
Of course SP1 fixes more than this particular issue, but this is the biggie. The one that could allow anyone to delete anything on your system. If you just rename the file above, you'll be safe.

Doesn't matter. You can delete it even, but just renaming it will do the same: making sure it doesn't seem there.

I think I made a really, really horrible mistake. It had been running smoothly for awhile and I was worried about the extra space it was taking up... so I dumped all but the most recent restore point. Now I am getting all these horrible mistakes. Sometimes nothing shows up in my control panal and music folders at all.
I just wanted to say, hang on to that backup for awhile after you think you don't need it. This is either happening because of this update, or the java one that followed it, or a combination of both. I don't even want to think I bought a lemon.....

Downloaded SP1 and it took 4 hrs. Bought the CD for 10. Now if I ever have to reformat (horrors) the quick fixs will be inchs away. So far no gremlins have shown up.

GoodMorphing - It should be in next month's official XP magazine. I don't know if that's a widely available zine or just a UK one though.

XP Sp1 has been working fine for the last 24hrs and I was able to get rid of the MSN junk. It only took about 28 minutes to download.....
