Bought some new kit....

Sunday, March 31, 2013 by Jafo | Discussion: Personal Computing

As you may have guessed by now....I'm kinda into Microsoft's FSX [the flight sim] .... because the scope for 'skinning' is pretty much limitless.   All those planes ...all those liveries....

But, along with high-end graphic cards, etc. you need input [as Number 5 would say] ....via something half-decent as a throttle and stick.

I've been using the Saitek X52 Pro for a couple of years...

...but there's another one....and it has a higher number [so must be better] the X65F Pro ....

...and the fun thing is....the stick doesn't move.  At all.

It responds to pressure instead .... no moving parts.

Now all I have to do is wait for it to arrive....

Doesn't move??? Isn't the whole idea to imitate reality? In planes, the joystick moves... yes?

Not anymore.  Modern passenger aircraft...and fighters [naturally] use pressure sticks now...

Saw that on the news....would have been a real buzz to see two of those...so low AND so close ....lots of special permissions there....the paper work would have been huge...

The stick in an F-16 has a travel of only about an inch in any direction, so a former Thunderbird told me - those guys have to have very steady hands.

I'm fortunate to have a close friend who's a senior pilot for a major airline.  A few years ago, he arranged for me to spend about 4 hours 'flying' a 737 simulator.  The sum of my prior flying experience had been computer-based sims - Jane's F-15, Reno Real Air Racing, F22 and a few others, all sit-at-your-desk-fiddle-the-stick stuff.  The 'real' sim was a total gas.  Remarkably easy to fly the things, truth be told, right out of the box - they have crazy big margins of error built in.

I'd like to see one for the YF-12A. That one didn't last very long as Uncle Sam opted for the SR-71 version.

Oh heck....saw the vid....

I guess the only way to make it TRULY accurate is....every time you crash your bank account is electronically accessed and reduced...

Nice equipment but far more than I would need to fly a plane into the ground. It would have to come with the ejector seat and parachute options.

And one day you might have a whole car if you keep collecting bits.
