Is it just me....again?

Saturday, March 23, 2013 by RedneckDude | Discussion: Personal Computing

Guys, I have blank tiles on my Modern UI start screen. Any ideas as to why?

You're supposed to color those in with Crayons.  (Fingerpaint will do for a touchscreen though.)

You accidentally installed Windows 9. The colored panels stand for an app, so you don't need to learn to read anymore. Progress.

I know it's the weekend and not many folks around, atleast not anyone who has Windows 8 installed apparently.

I can say of the Windows 8 screenshots that I have seen I haven't seen this problem.

@RedneckDude

I've been running Windows 8 for a long time and have not encountered that issue, but I do have a suggestion for you.

When on the 'start screen' go to SETTINGS > TILES and hit 'clear personal information from tiles'.   Does that change anything for you?

EDIT:

After a quick web-search.....

Apparently if you have the UAC disabled you may run into this issue (as according to MS support the 'tiles' like the UAC to be on).  Some users with certain third-party AV/Firewall software are also running into your issue.

I do have UselessAnnoyingCrap disabled. I'll check the other stuff.

OK, enabling UAC didn't fix it. Clearing personal info didn't either.

Yes, I rebooted.

Well since I haven't personally experienced the issue the only real suggestion I had was the 'clearing of personal info' from the tiles because I know that helped a client of mine with some tile info not updating.  Since that didn't work, all I've got left are things I've picked up from doing some topical web-searching (I'm the curious type).

I've read some forum posts elsewhere regarding a program called "Sage Thumbs" being the culprit and another guy had issues with a shell integrated codec called "FastPicture Viewer".  In both cases an uninstall of the offending program/codec solved the issue.

Yeah, I can "unpin" it from start, but I would rather fix it. They work for the apps they're for, but they come up blank.

Hey, maybe if I unpin, then repin.....hmmmmm....

Nope. No touchscreen. Just regular old screen.

As long as its a regular 'old' screen finger paints won't hurt too too much. Good practice though for when you get the touchy one.

Had a touchscreen Dell AIO but I let it go back.

I couldn't afford that expense for an OS that would be a toy/learning tool.

Windows 7 is still my main OS and likely will be for a good while yet.

8 is better with resources, That's about the only benefit I see in it over 7.

I have plenty of resources, so I'll be fine on 7.
