Win98 questions...

Friday, August 16, 2002 by Luke de Sade | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I have a couple of questions and I want to know if you guys can help me solve them:

1. I wanna get rid of Notepad. I really do. I don't want that in my computer. I really don't. I already have kewlpÄd, Notetab, and Metapad, so I really have no need for Notepad now. I wanna get it out of my computer. OUT! Now, I did a search in my PC for "notepad" and got the following files: notepad.chm, notepad.cnt, notepad.exe, notepad.hlp, notepad.lgc, and notepad.stb. I really don't wanna screw things up in my computer deleting files I would need later on, so, what I wanna ask is, can I delete all those files without problem, or does Win98 need any of these files for something else?

2. Long ago, I found the small Internet Explorer animated .gif file in my computer. Now, I don't remember where it is. You know what I'm talking about? Is the little animated graphic located on the upper right corner of the Internet Explorer browser. I wanna change that too. Where can I find that file? I searched for *.gif, but didn't find it. Any help?

Have you tried Add/Remove files for taking the notepad out? If you look (and this is from memory so it may not be exactly right) when you first open that it shows another tab that is for windows components. When you open that there are several sections and one is accessories. It might be in there.

Save yourself some potential grief and just delete the shortcut, all those files together probably don’t add up to 200kb so why bother?

If memory serves me correctly, you’ll only see the IE logo as a file if you have a “branded” version of IE. If you do it will probably be somewhere in the IE folder inside the “Program Files” folder.

Yeah.... like Mercury said! Such a little bitty file, you delete it and poof... no windows (this from someone who deleted europa once thinking since I was not going to europa anytime soon....)

Ok, I found how to uninstall Windows components (I uninstalled Outlook Express, since I have never, EVER, used it), but Notepad wasn't there. I'll guess I'll have to conform with deleting the shortcut.

I've found that if you ignore everything that comes with windows, you forget that they are even there after a while.

i mean, how often do you use the phone dialer?

did i just hear you ask me what phone dialer i'm talking about?

exactly

I NEVER use the Windows WAVE file program (file name is sndrec32.exe or something like that) and that is exactly the reason that i can't be bothered to delete it.

The animated gif is not an animated gif. It is a bitmap with the separate frames (I can't remember exactly how many) all above each other. Search for '*.bmp'.

Oh, it's a .bmp file? No wonder I couldn't find it.

Damn, I still can't find it. I searched for *.bmp and couldn't find it.

moshi, I read part of that stuff you linked and noticed that to change that I have to fool around with the Windows registry, and I really don't wanna go there yet. Isn't there an easier way?

I had a program that did it all for you. I don't use it anymore, and I can't remember it's name, best bet is to try download.com or something.

If you wan't to change stuff with IE then maybe you would consider getting Neoplanet. It's basicly IE in another shell, so theres no compatablity issues (as far as i'm aware) and it has some cool little features built in to it also. http://www.neoplanet.com to get it

What skins IE? Neoplanet or Webblinds? I mean, I know Webblinds skins IE, but Neoplanet skins IE too?

Neoplanet works off of IE, kind of a front end to it. A little more than skinning, but IE is it's base.

There was a thread about Neoplanet here about a month ago, called "Ode to Neoplanet". You might want to dig back and find it.

No, you better not. Did you notice that they are not updating the Neoplanet site anymore. I think the newest skins there are from 1999. I could be wrong on the date, though.
