How do you skin?

Recently bought OD, with the whole "sha-bang". Initially, I was told that it is not necessary to have SkinStudio to skin the windows GUI. I played around using my graphics proggie to change the look of existing skins, but felt out of the loop, so to speak. Let it be known I am not a programmer by any means. After experimenting with SkinStudio, I feel just as lost and disconnected. I have copiously studied the available documentation, I know quite abit is outdated, but at this stage I wouldn't know the difference! 
My "poll" is how do you learn, what was your tried and true method at "picking this up?"
I am primarily looking for the "path" taken by the majority, guess I need a sense of knowing others were where I am "standing."

I agreed with davad70 100%. That's exactly how I started. And as for discouraging, I must have opened SkinStudio for 30 minutes and given up a dozen times before I finally started to make one.
I began with the luna skin, replacing images and using the originals as templates to get the right sizes. Then I started tweaking attributes to see what they would do. I asked a few questions about specific things that were confusing, and the next thing I knew, I had made my first skin.
Once you've made one, you won't be able to stop.

It's pretty easy to get discouraged at first, but if you keep plugging away it will come to you eventually.
