No sound even after driver install

Well I decided to use XP until we can figure out what to do with the new build. I installed XP. The HP website does not have a driver for audio so I looked up the motherboard information. That info lists the sound chip as a Realtek HD audio chip. So I went to the RealTek site and downloaded the driver for HD sound. Installed the driver. I have a volume control icon next to the clock. When I turn up or turn down the volume there is no sound. While playing a song from WMP there is no sound. I have confimed the speakers are working by plugging them into my MP3 player. I have no idea why it's not working, it was working yesterday. I double checked my BIOS settings, onboard audio is enabled. Control panel says there is a playback device. Just no sound at all, no matter how high I turn up the volume and speakers.
Any ideas?

So I did a system restore to the point before the other drivers I installed. I then installed the drivers you pointed out and the other program it needed yet I still have no sound.

Of course. Still didn't help. I even reinstalled Windows XP then used your link. Still no sound. I know the sound works fine because I can hear songs played when I use the system under Linux.

That sound problem that you're having is not unusual. I had the same issue about a year ago when I had a dual boot setup. I Googled the problem and was surprised that it's a very common problem. I don't remember what the driver was that fixed it, but if you do some research in all the Google responses, there are some links provided by several people to download an alternative driver that will allow it to work. -- Ace --

I looked through all of the google links before I posted here. I was hoping someone here had a better idea. I've tried many solutions listed on Google. Kinda rubs me the wrong way as it was working two days ago.

Problem solved. I was missing two jumpers on the audio header on the motherboard. Thanks!
