I'd be happy if my 56K would download at 56K. The most I get is 28.8. Right now it is 26.4. The phone co. said to bad.

I think that here in the US, there is a maximum allowed rate. Something like 49kbs or something. Thought I read something about this somewhere

After enjoying a T-1 line at work for the last five years, the company I worked for imploded in the dot com bust. Now most of the time I'm back to 56k that usually connects at 26.4k (a Texas thing?) It sure is painful. There is no DSL available to me in this small town, and satellite is too expensive. Life is hard.

I know what you mean. In my neighborhood 26.4 is all I can get. Charter cable won't fix the connection because I'am last on the line.

Don't you guys can have an ADSL connection (telephone line)? I use it here, instead of DSL (cable connection) and it works really fine.

Not all areas are equipped for ADSL yet. Not to mention it's too expnsive for a lot of us.

Sylva goes to sit next to Randy and that WiseOldMan up there.

I have a 56k connection too. On those rare occasions I can actually connect it barely goes to 28.8.

treetog: SWB(Southwestern Bell) says that my area is outside of their towers. It will be about a year before they service this area.

This is probably redundant but for those on a dialup connection, have you checked with your ISP and modem vendor for the best control strings to optimize the connection (compression, etc.). When I do have to revert to my dialup (rarely) I always get at least a 40K connection. If you can actually get the compression to synch you'd be amazed at what even dialup can do.

My ISP tried everything and told me to check with the phone Co. No luck.

the only thing I can use in my area is one speed connection on cable connection, if I don't like the company I have to deal with phone connection.

Ok. I do not understand this kilobytes per second thing. I have 56k but when it comes to dowloading anything it is not higher than 5kb. AND it steadly goes downward as time goes by to 2 or even 1kb!!!! So if you get 56k and download at 28k that is great compared to me. Maybe its because I'm a Juno user.

When they say they get speeds of 28 k/sec they mean a throughput of 28 kilobits not Kilobytes.

Roughly, if you divide the 28 kilobits by 8 you will get how many Kilobytes....about 3.5, so don't worry, you are in the same speed range.

In my case, with high speed ADSL I get 3 megabits throughput or roughly translated that's about a download speed of 375 Kilobytes/sec.
