So the computer finally is showing it's age

Monday, January 14, 2013 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

I'm so glad that you did what you could for kona, it means a lot to me also.  In fact, both you and Jim [RedneckDude] have renewed my faith in humanity with all that you've done.  Many thanks to both of you.

As for being a friend to kona, yeah, I am... and proud to say so.  While some here at Wincustomize may not appreciate kona and perhaps even dislike him, I took the time to get to know and understand him better, for who he is rather than his oft' misunderstood one/two lined responses in various threads.  People who judge him purely on the basis of those are making a mistake, for they do not and cannot tell us what he's really like as a person.

After exchanging several PMs and emails, I discovered that kona has difficulty in translating his thoughts and feelings to the written word, and that sometimes his thoughts are fragmented over several posts/PMs/emails.  However, that does NOT make him stupid or an idiot, far from it. No, what kona has, among other things, is ADD, ADHD, meaning he a disability and thus is not as fortunate as the rest of us, particularly when it comes to the ability to communicate thought and ideas.  Sadly, though, instead of receiving compassion and perhaps a little understanding, kona has too often been the subject of ridicule and teasing, something we as a community should be ashamed of, seriously.  Yes, we need to do better.

Understanding and patience, taking the time to listen and sometimes reading between the lines. Oft times what is not said is just as telling as what is said. I try to do that, draw them out, let them take their time and express themselves as best they can. The depth of emotions, the feelings are difficult to put into words on a piece of paper or type in a forum. There is no button for sadness, frustration, feelings of inadequacy and so on. These things are what people with ADD or ADHD face on a daily basis. The ability to focus has been denied them through no fault of their own. We as a people need to see beyond this disability and 'focus' on the person, see them, feel with them, let them know in no uncertain terms that we do care. Alas, in this world, so many things are seriously lacking.

My post was meant to inject some humor. Notice the name and the list, an impossible list at that. Those who know me here also know that I have a penchant for silliness and poking fun at things. If it offended you I apologize, it was not meant to be so. Ask DoorTech1....he once called me the wise-cracking stepchild of the forums. To me Kona you are a kind of inspiration, a person willing to overcome hardship and remain connected with those you care about and the things that are important to you in life. Starkers will say I'm a nut job and others too may have a handle for me though I remain blissfully ignorant of such things. Even ask DaveBax, he'll probably tell you I'm a couple of sandawiches sort of a pickanick. Be well my friend.

Thanks. I haven't been feeling well lately. I hope things get better. I feel OK physically, just these things I deal with in my head take a big toll on me day in and day out. It has a big effect on not only me but those around me. Thanks for understanding, not many on this site do. Some think I am full of it.

Starkers, any word on the operating system for the new setup?
