So the computer finally is showing it's age

Monday, January 14, 2013 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Quoting kona0197, reply 179As much as I applaud your effort I fear that it will not work. I haven't used my Paypal account in years and the Paypal debit card that I had with my account expired years ago. Getting a new one would take more time and effort than it's worth.

Hmmm, that might be a problem due to Microsoft's inability to assist me.  According to their Sydney rep I cannot make a purchase for your region, and the one I am able make here will not provide you with the correct product key for your region.

There is another way, I just need to contact doortech1 via PM to arrange something.  Thing is, I have to go out for an hour or so, but I will sort something out when I get back.

Kona, you would not need a debit card or to link paypal to a bank account. That is just for you to be able to transfer funds between the bank and paypal.  If you were sent money , via paypal frpm Starkers, then use your paypal , which would not take long to set up, to  purchase the OS.

I will help if you both decide thats better, but I thought I would inject that thought.

True, but I doubt Microsoft accepts Paypal payments.

BTW I just noticed that the $39.95 price ends this month.

Okay, so the folks at Paypal are still being proper assholes and reactivating my account using my new email address just isn't going to happen in time to purchase this OS before the $39.99 deal expires.  They want me to jump through hoops and provide all sorts personal information before my account is again live, and then I'm told any funds I deposit will require a 180 day clearance while they check the validity of my application.  Well as far as I'm concerned they can go get royally rooted with the rough end of a pineapple.  Thing is, Shaunna now has an active Paypal account and I can transfer the funds to her bank account to forward on to forward the necessary funds via Paypal to purchase Win 8... it's just to whom that may be, that's all.

Now kona, doortech1 is correct in that you can have a Paypal account just to receive funds and make purchases, it's just whether or not you'd face the same crap I did in activating a new account, etc.  In the end, it may be simpler just to forward the funds to doortech to make the purchase for you, but it wouldn't hurt to see if you can get an active Paypal account first.  In either event, let me know so that I can take the next step, okay.

Wow. I was wrong. I ran the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and look at what I found:

Paypal

So maybe we can get it using Paypal.

Yes, so if you can set up an account to receive it, I'll organise the transfer as soon as you PM me the account details.  It takes a couple of days for the funds to become fully available, but it would be in time to make the $39.99 offer.

See, we're making progress.

Oh...almost forgot. About the product key. The one I have may or may not be the correct one. I have no way of knowing for sure. When you install Win 7 try the key, if it works fine. If not you'll have to leave the install where it is and call Microsoft. They''ll issue you a new product key. Just tell them you got the OS as a gift. Worked for me when the Product key for XP was lost. Best of luck Kona with this kick-ass system. You deserve it!

Well hopefully I will not have to call. Do they not have a way to do that over the internet? I don't like to call anyone usually. For some reason phones have always scared me.

I can understand that, especially if they have an accent that might make it difficult to understand. If you can use another computer I don't see why not. Lets see how it plays out. Someone might come up with a better solution.

You'll have to go to a site that will show you a list of numbers. You'll make a call that will have an automated voice asking for those numbers, then, it will give you numbers in return.

The ATI Radeon 2400 Pro is slightly better than the specs of the on-board 6100 series nVidia gfx. The only other real advantages are not sharing system memory and multiple monitor support. The downside is ATI Catalyst Control Center. I am not fond of it at all and removing it can be a pain. It has DVI, VGA and HDMI hookups, so just let me know. It's yours if you want it.

1st # higher is better, 2nd # lower is better......from Passmark.
