Wincustomize to charge?!?!?!

Friday, August 2, 2002 by Danamal | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Now now... I know full well how much it costs to run a big website... I do it myself. I don't charge people money to download things from me. I know that advertising could pay the dues of running this site two or three times over. Now, you might say that you dont want the site cluttered by advertising... but you just ask the people out there if they would rather fork over $20 for something that used to be free or have to close some annoying popup windows everyonce in a while... I would, in fact, be happy to pay if I saw some real benefit... I don't.

what I want to know is what large site is this that he is talking about?? How many visitors it gets and is it image heavy?? I also would like to know if that site also has downloads (Like 2 mb) and how many peple download from that site.

If this is a text mostly site he is talking about then I guess that is why he thinks it does not cost to much.

"You can't have your kayak and heat it too" ..... very obscure Eskimo proverb.

Ok, I'm not too sure about this, because I almost never visit the wallpaper section (come to think of it, maybe I should. I'm getting sick of the standard Windows wallpapers), but if you asked the wallpaper designers to upload the wallpaper compressed in a zip file, it would decrease the size of the section by approximately 80-98% (the average compression rate of .bmp files).

Maybe they already are, I wouldn't be surprised. But it's just a thought.

Plus the fact that it would mean less mb downloaded/uploaded by everyone. That would also help solve the bandwith issues.

Ok, I'll attempt a translation:

Laist = Least
Thge = The
oversreas = overseas
whenm = when
putchasing = purchasing

I think that's what he meant anyway. But Aafuss, remember that the $20 is in US currency, and currently, AUS$1 is approximately US$0.55 (55 cents).

So basically, you're paying a bit under $40 to subscribe.

or you could just go to BoXXi's homepage and ask him why the hell he hasn't posted all of his work there...as if everyone would swoop in and download it and rip it and plaster it all over the ethernet subways and claim it as their own...
