Computing without windowblinds.

Sunday, November 4, 2012 by rustysam | Discussion: Personal Computing

I just installed windows 8 pro.  Windowblinds is not compatible.  The lack of a windowblinds update may just cause me not to renew any stardock subscriptions.  Stardock has known about windows 8 for some time now.  What is the problem Stardock?

I normally bite my tongue[Literally] when people complaint. Although at the moment, I'm actually logged in and saw your post. Oh, your choice to upgrade to Windows 8 is not supported by the current offerings of Stardock? Get this, it was YOUR decision to upgrade. When the remaining products offered by Stardock are ready fro Windows 8 are ready, YOU will be made aware of it. In the meantime, quit your whining and live with what YOU have chosen to use...

Nothing. Most everyone else seems to have read Neil Banfield's (Windowblinds' developer) replies on the matter.

Windowblinds 8 in the works. It'll arrive when it's ready.

We plan on updating more of our software as time goes on.

At the moment,  Start8, Fences 2, Multiplicity 2, Tiles (beta), and WindowFX 5 (beta) all work with Win 8.

Other Stardock applications are not certified to work with Windows 8 and running current version may or may not work.  At this time though, they are not supported.

There is no problem, there's just people that don't know our schedule.

Ahhh now that Windows 8 is released, It is now time for the bleating and whining to begin about WB not being WIN8 compatible yet. WB 8 will be ready when it is ready. How hard is that to understand. Like the first person said. YOU made the decision to upgrade so YOU deal with it until WB 8 is ready for release. That is all......

Probably no big rush to deliver a program to a Win 8 market  that hasn't surpassed Win 9X and 2K in share.

There's nothing "wrong" with the default look of any OS. This being a customizing site, members tend to want to go that route as opposed to leaving it "as-is."

Sold! Now i can upgrade

Might be good to add a page to the SD store to highlight the aspects of OD that work with win8.

To me at least, Windowblinds never did Windows 7 any favors either since you can't skin everything 100%. No matter what the theme, it just never seems complete. That is no fault of Stardock or those that make Windowblind skins. Just the way it is. MS did an excellent job with the default Aero theme and I've never experienced an "Ick" factor with it.

I haven't kept it on my system for any longer than a few days since Windows 7 came out.

Really, what is the need for Windowblinds on 8? You don't have the standard Start menu any longer.

Start8, while nice, is really just a crutch to get you over an initial discomfort. Once I got used to the new methods I can navigate around 8 and my programs faster than I did with the legacy start menu.

If Windowblinds for Win8 will let you change the Start Menu background and change the look of the tiles (without breaking the live tiles) then it may be worth something. Otherwise, to me, the new look grew on me and I have no problems with it at all. When I'm running programs I'm not looking at my Start menu and tiles anyway.

Toys not working right is why i'm so keen to upgrade. Am running winXP 32-bit on a system with 64-bit hardware. Increasing the computing power for $40 would be easy decision if not for the jumped shark. But SD is on the case, so i'm poised to do it. $90 for a modern OS with a user customized UI. Is hard to pass up at this moment in time. Big difference from winXP to win8it. BUT just this morning i see that Win7 upgrades can be found for under a hundred bucks now. So i still got some thought on this. Pass up OD once again and spend the $100 all on Win7. Or go with win8 + OD for about the same money.

I hate to sound a bit whiney but as-is Windowblinds doesn't play nice with GalCiv 2 or Fallen Enchantress (on Win 7).  In GC2 it just results in some screen bumping as the titlebar hops in and back out, but in FE it can hang the game.  I don't know if maybe there's some conflict with Fences 2 or the Windows 7 theme manager, but I just can't be bothered with it any more.

So i still got some thought on this.

If you haven't already, you might run the Win7 upgrade adviser and Win8 upgrade adviser to see if they provide any food for thought.  For example there's some old Office s/w that'll run on Win7 and not Win8 based on the advisers.
