why are WBA's being downloaded as ZIP's

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 by gmc2 | Discussion: WindowBlinds

I've had several PM's asking what the deal is with blinds being downloaded from the site as ZIP files instead of the expected WBA file that was uploaded in the first place.

My suggested remedy is to change the ZIP extension to a WBA one and double click, which I believe will do the trick.

however, why is this happening in the first place???

Easiest fix: Use another browser.

seriously, tell a new member who chooses to use IE that they need to install another browser to download some skins from WC? I think not.
Last I heard, SD site(s) neeed to use IE in some areas to function properly. Switching back and forth to get full functionality is not practical.

Operative word here being "some". All other content seems to be ok, zipped or otherwise. I've only been here since 2008, but have always used a version of IE as a browser. I've never seen IE6, 7, 8, or 9 change a file extension on any other files I have downloaded, here at WC or elsewhere. Why is it that only .wba's get renamed?

The .wba files were just fine up until lately, but now some but not all .wba's get renamed to .zip. Blaming it on IE9 alone is somewhat of a cop-out imho.

I posted a while back about the weird problems but did not get any response at all. Along with this problem, at about the same time that links to users sites got broken, nothing uploaded to WC shows the file size. There is without a doubt something wrong with how the site is handling uploads and downloads.

IE is the problem.  It doesn't recognize what a .wba file is so it changes to .zip.

I would never advise anyone to use IE.

Sorry ID, but IE is not the problem at all, I can download a .wba from my site and it downloads as a .wba. It is something on WC causing the issue evidently.

Then explain why I can download the same windowblind from the GUIC site as a wba and it works as it is intended. Nothing gets renamed, yet the browser is the same.

echo, echo,

I have essentially used IE since way back time and have not had this problem before.

This problem has started recently and coincides with the GUIC starting time.

Downloading from the GUIC site presents me with a wba file.

Downloading from the WC site presents me with a zip file.

IT'S NOT THE BROWSER, IT'S THE SITE.

I'm using Firefox and the three or four I downloaded today downloaded as .zip files. My problem is, I'm used to the .wba so now what do I do? I haven't had to worry about it before. I'm still trying to figure out where to put the wallpaper files because WB isn't finding them in my usual places. While I appreciate the extras, someone like me who uses them but does not design them or get into the mechanics of them will find the .zip files harder to work with.

I poked some web devs. They'll take a look.

Extracting files is a simple process though, so this shouldn't really be a big issue for anyone.

agreed don't see the big deal

Because you can't tell when it downloads as a .zip, is it really a .zip with a .wba and other content in it, or is it a .wba that is now a .zip. Try extracting both to your desktop. The results are not the same.

Plus it defeats the whole "self-installing" thing for WindowBlinds skins.

Thank you for giving this some attention, Zubaz.

All I know and care about is how to install a skin after extracting the file. What file to go to. Why can't just installing a skin be simple?

You can simply double click a zip to see inside it without extracting it. See what's in it, then you know what to do with it.

WindowBlinds will install a zip file.
