Well I would use programs like CATIA or I-Deas but then I'm a CAD Engineer, I believe people use programs like 3D Studio Max, Lightwave, Maya along with Photoshop/Paintshop Pro and a large dose of creativity.

i use Hash Animation:Master 2001, sometimes a free version of Bryce 2 for Windows, Corel Photopaint 10 and Photoshop. For modelling i use sometimes a limited version of Cagliary Truespace 3

I mainly use a combination of 3dstudio max and photoshop to make my walls.......and as Woodbridge said, 'a large dose of creativity'.
