Desktop Icon Size

Saturday, July 6, 2002 by mitchec | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've just started using iconpackager so this might sound a bit dumb. When
previewing various icon I've noticed a lot got up to 128 x 128. Is there any
way to display icons this size on the desktop. The maximum using the normal
controls seem to be 64 x64

If you are using Windows XP you can have your Icons go up to 72. The 128 Icons are there probably because the set was also designed for a Apple / Mac. The 64 and 72 icons look pretty good on the desktop but unfortunately Windows will make all your icons that size. Startmenu. folders, etc. which looks weird!

You can open regedit and navigate to this key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics. Change the shell icon size to 128 and reboot. Then you will be able to change the sizes up to 128 pixel icons. At this setting however, all of your windows icons will be HUGE...Desktop X is a better solution IMHO.
