Computer problem - no sound!!

Got quite an issue here on my hands. Computer will not play any sound. Under device manager the sound card is listed and Windows says it's working properly. Yet under sound in control panel it says no audio device. How can I fix this? I have tried installing the proper driver from my computer maker's website and I even tried system restore. Nothing has worked. Before I reinstall Windows I thought I would seek help first.

It's not a problem of where I plug in the speakers. The control panel says I have no audio device for playback. I currently don't even have a little speaker in the taskbar for adjusting the volume. I haven't installed any codecs at all. Seems the system can't find the driver anymore.

You say it shows in Device Manager. Go to that device properties. What does it show in the Driver Tab?

If the sound card isn't part of the mobo, you could try unplugging and re-plugging it in.... perhaps the connection to the mobo has come loose, or is defective?

do what doc said. shut down , remove card. reboot without card, remove drivers, shut down, re install card, reboot, reinstall drivers.

Sound card is part of my mobo and was working fine last night before a restart. I don't recall installing or uninstalling any drivers. I did update the Realtek High Definition driver to see if that would solve the issue with iTunes skipping. I updated from Realtek's site. It should be working.
It is. No worries there.

Make sure any onboard audio is disabled in setup, could cause a conflict.

sorry, last of your post was not showing yet. Try entering setup and checking the onboard is set to use. Could also check audio properties hardware box to make sure your audio device is selected.

could also be some connection to the skipping problem you were having with Itunes.Maybe uninstall Itunes also, then redo sound drivers and then reinstall Itunes.

BIOS says audio is enabled. Audio properties is blacked out, I can't select anything.

be sure of the 32bit 64bit driver also.maybe different versions for each.

iTunes was uninstalled this mornng. I have reinstalled audio drivers with no sucess.
Anyone seen Jafo or Yrag around?

what os are you using? should be a use this device selection under one of the properties selections.

Do a System restore back to a time just before you installed the new drivers kona. If it started after you installed new drivers, then that is evidently the issue.

Windows XP Home Edition 32 bit
will it give you a selection under the hardware tab, not the audio?if so , is audio device listed? if so, click on it, at the bottom should be a enable this device choice. Sorry if you already know and tried this.

Have you tried other speakers or plugging in a set of headphones? If you have an audio port on the front as well as the rear, try using it also.
If you recently installed any codec packs, remove it.
