IM compatibility between different clients
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 by Philly0381 | Discussion: Personal Computing
Hi folks
I like coming to the forums to ask pretty general questions and this is one of them.
For lack of knowledge or whatever it may be I use Windows Live Messenger. I have one email account get a great amount of emails (maybe three to five in a busy week). I chat mainly with one person who doesn't use or like WLM and uses Yahoo. The problem is that alot of the chat we type never shows up on the other persons screen. Yes, it does get frustration at times. So is anyone familiar with compatibility issues between the two? Are both of us missing some settings in our respective progams that would correct this problem? Should both of us just use the same client?
I'm not looking to change my current email or anything like that, just want to be able to chat and see all of the conversation.
Any help, suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

You can use YahooMessenger without using a Yahoo mailbox. The only trouble RnD or I have with it are the Audibles not loading or them not playing without an Imvironment loaded. The voice calling feature saves me a ton of phone airtime and the quality is good.
I've tried other clients, but YM is what I've stuck with.

Hey Philly,
I tried to post a opinion/recommendation late last night/morning but, I got a weird-never-before-seen-message. It's after 2 AM here in PA and I can't remember what the details were. Anyways, in my message I explained how I met my wife on Yahoo Chat and praised it for it's features. I ran a query and came across an article that may be of help. Ever since I moved out to PA from CA back in 2004, I have not had the need to use a chat client. However, back in the days I did come across a lot of great articles regarding cross-platform/chat clients. Here is one that stood out, I hope it helps: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-instant-messaging-client.htm Mind you, the article update is not that long ago. I have to admit, I did come across these recommendations many times before in my quest to find a chat client. Mind you, when I first started using a chat client back in the mid 90's they were all Java based 'I think'? Happy Chattin' my friend...

I have Trillian which supports a boatload of services, including Yahoo Chat, Google Talk, Skype, Windows Live, ICQ, AOL, Jabber and social networks like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn as well as email all in the same window.

Philly, I use Yahoo, you use WLM, so does Jimbo. You two sometimes don't see what I type.
I always see what you type.
I'd go with Yahoo Messenger, but I also have Trillian.
Just my 2 cents.

The services interoperate, so unless one of you has network problems or an old client there shouldn't be any issues. You might look through WLM and Yahoos support pages and see if there's anything interesting.
