How much are Icons worth to you?

Monday, June 3, 2002 by mormegil | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

With the final release of Iconpackanger 2.0 I am trying desperately to finish up the rest of my FauxS-XP Icon Packs. I have Cobalt, Emerald, Ruby, Amber, Crystal, Sapphire, and purple in the gate and will be up over the next week or so. These are a large commitment of time, and I love doing them.

However I am considering make a FauxS-XP (Black) Iconpack, and offering it up as a reword for a Paypal donation of 2 or 3 dollars. I don’t know how well this will work since most skinners are tech savvy and will be able to get a copy for free without to much work, I have no illusions that I could keep them form being passed around the net. My only hope is that a low enough “Donation” price will make people feel it is worth it.
Anyway, what I am wondering is will I get Flamed if I do this, and how much is to much to ask for a donation.

Let me know what you think and feel free to be rude. I would hate to kill my rep in the skinning community, but I could use the money.

There's definitely a market for high quality icon sets.

I don't think the Paypal thing would be out of line. But... Since you like doing icons, and there is a desire for some nice icon sets, a suggestion you might persue is to see if Pixtudio might desire the services of an iconist. You may be able to work a deal to provide icons for upcoming releases for a percentage of sales revenue. From all indications, it would be more lucrative than hoping for donations. By partnering with Pixtudio, you'd already have crossed the barrier of "pay for pixels" by enhancing a product people are already purchasing.

Apologies to Pixtudio if they want to keep it a closed shop and limit the number of artists, but I thought it was worth suggesting.

One more point, I think your style would work well with the Pixtudio "style" prominent in their last two releases. Dangeruss sez "Go for it!"

I am just assuming that Pixtudio already has Icon artist on call, feel free to correct me if I am wrong?

Well, this is a very subjective question... But let's work from a anexisting pricing model. Pixtudio sells their skin suites for about $10. Based on that, I'd say $5 for an icon set sounds about right.

I do not see anything wrong with using pay pal. But I think teaming up with someone to sell a suite would be better. As far as ripping is concered there will always be somebody but the mojority will buy it (especially if most "rippers" know you will release it to the public anyway after a few months so it wouldn't be worth to rip)

BTW
releasing it to the public after a certain time frame will make you less of a target.

I wouldn't mind paying for your icons, you do really nice work. Especially when you consider the work that icons take! Couple of things would hold me back though:

1) If they were XP only I wouldn't purchase. Only have 98 for now.
2) Don't really like Paypal, If there was another option I would be more inclined.

I can tell you this I would be more than willing to pay an extra five bucks or so for a Pixtudio suite with icons... The last one I remember them doing was Marinara and I thought they did that themselves.

mormegil,

Considering the excellent quality of your icons (I'm currently using the cobalt FauxS-XP set), I would have no problem lobbing a few bucks at you in the way of support. If you work something out with Pixtudio, that would be very cool, excellent skins and excellent icons!

Enjoy

How much per set. Like Aqua- $2 Or Emerald-$3 Or Black- $.25. I maybe use 1 or 2 sets only. Paypal sure. Cheaper price might bring more pay response from us leeches.
