Grif, just about every sport has a World Cup.

Now, England v Argentina... Hmm, Argentina looks like the better team to me.

Griffinme: hockey may be surprising. European countries are excellent too. In a hockey World Cup, the contenders would be Canada, Russia, Sweden, Slovakia, Czec Republic, Finland and maybe the USA.
For sure basketball is all american.

But no sport is truly as international as football (soccer). It's literally played everwhere!

I once saw this list of events in order of magnitude:

1. World Cup (football)
2. European Cup (again football)
3. Olympics

Paxxy, you mean hockey or ice hockey. Different beasts you know.

I think the England v Argentina game was the best one so far, but maybe a 2x0 would be a more fair result.

encemo: Yes, Spain is playing very well too, thye are learning a lot from the Brazilian players that plays over there. MOUHAAAAAA!!!

Ah no Crae: there is only one true hockey and its played on ice.
Of course, they have hockey on grass, but that's like playing soccer on ice.

Football on ice would be rather slippery. And it's hard to hit the ball while wearing skates. One tackle and you'd have your leg slit open...

USA ties S. Korea!!
Looks like we will be in the second round.

Here are some quotes from the AP story about the game.

"Because of the tension surrounding the game, organizers heightened security. When the U.S. charter flight from Seoul arrived at Daegu Airport on Sunday, two tanks were on the runway and the Americans were greeted by the usual SWAT teams and police."

"American players took comfort that the field is surrounded by a 400-meter track, meaning only those fans with strong arms could hope to throw objects at them. That contrasted with Saprissa Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica, where fans are just feet from the field and pelted U.S. players with coins, bottles and bags of urine during qualifiers in the past two years."

Such a loving world. Imagine if the games had been at someplace really hostile, like France.
