Allright now,
I've been using computers for years now - started around 1981 messing around with a mainframe at school and shortly thereafter got myself one of those IBM clones that ran a GUI called GEM. Things have changed since the days of the 14.4 modem, paper tape readers, etc. I guess I'm trying to say that I've been around for some time. Having said all of that - could someone please tell me what "leet" and "1337" are? I have seen these terms over and over but never asked. Also thought it would be a lighter topic than most that I've been watching/participating in as of late. Thanks.

1337 is leet. The 1 is the l, the 3's are the E's, and the 7 is the T. As far as I know, it is a kind of numeric language. As in numbers and symbols are used to show letters. For example, I could write the word 'letter' like this: 13773R. $'s can be used as S's too.

What sounds strange to me bmetelsky, is that you had 14.4 modems back in the early 80's....I remember dialing into my favorite BBS as 110 baud back then....
