Windows 2000 Home Edition

I have been wanting to purchase the Windows 2000 Home Edition upgrade and get rid of this awful ME (which keeps crashing), but can't seem to find it anywhere. Searched the net and everything. Hubby won't upgrade to XP because we would have to replace the scanner, printer, etc. too so he compromised for the 2000, but now I can't find it. Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase it or are they just not offering that anymore?

Tried the Pricewatch, but all they list is Windows XP home - back to square one.

Well, I called Microsoft and they said all they had was the 2000 Pro Edition (did not make a home edition), but we would run across the same problem with it as far as hardware as with the XP, but also informed me that they are updating their hardware list - so to make a long story short - guess I'll have to ride it out with ME a bit longer. Thanks for all the help. I was hoping for a quick fix.

how are you using your computer?
if you are using it seperately, then you could simply set up a dual boot.
reboot to winXP when you want to use it, and boot back to winME when hubby wants to use any hardware that isnt being detected by XP.
i do this for games compatibity and a place for testing. simple to set up, and works a treat.
just remember that winME cannot read NTFS partitions, so if you format the winXP partition like that you will only be able to do file transfers from XP.

I'll have my hubby read your comment - makes sense to me. I use mine for games (c) drive and graphics (d) drive. Of course all my programs are on the (c) drive (including Corel & Wordperfect), but I did move Jasic Pro to the (d) drive. My cd-writer, scanner and printer programs are all on the (c) drive. (We just added the (d) drive.) My c drive is 40 gigs but now down to 21 gigs and hubby said I was filling it up too fast so he added the d drive which is a 45 gig drive and I moved all my graphics over to it, but alas it seems it is down to around 25 gigs. What can I say? (I believe I mentioned I get byte happy.) He cringes when he see me downloading anything. Thanks for the info feline. It is definitely something to think about.

Feline. We have seperate computers. Both have duel hard drives. Both C drives have me on them. If I get XP I will put them on the D drives. How would I set them up? By the way, this is hubby. You can post the info or email us. Thank You.

Well, Conquest10, I envy you. Mine crashes at least 3, 4, or more times a day. I have 768 mgs ram, but when working on graphics it seems to take its toll big time. Plus it doesn't help when you keep trying to do things it doesn't like. I tax it to the max!

um, i have just spotted part of the problem.
the win9x OS's dont like more than 512 meg of ram in the machine. this is a known limitation of the OS its self.
it doesnt effect NT, 2k or XP.
as for installing a dual boot, its easy.
my advice is to clear the target drive (D in my case) first, and backup, just to be on the safe side
then insert the relivent CD-ROM.
select "advanced" install, since this will let you select which partition (drive) to install to.
when it asks which drive to use, pick drive D, and off it goes.
what it does is it updates your C drive so that when you boot the machine, instead of just booting into winME, you get a (text mode) menu listing winME and winXP, with 30 seconds to make a selection.
if you dont do anything, after 30 seconds it boots to the default OS (configurable from control pannel in XP).
this gives you simple access to both winME and winXP.
and since you have installed winXP to D drive, the only midification that it makes (as far as i can tell) to C drive is to add the boot menu. it leaves everything else alone.
it really is this easy

on top of that, one note of caution.
install winME, 98 ect first. tradionally they are not so good at setting up or dealing with dual boots. win98 and above is supposed to be better at this, but i always install NT, 2k or XP second, and have never had a problem with the dual boot.

(paxx) We have a cannon(old) BJC -7000 and I didn't see it on the list. I might have read it wrong. Even thou it is slow, I like the way it prints color photos and I don't want to spend the money buying another printer.

XP's compatibility list is getting longer. You can check out Microsoft's hardware compatibility list just to make sure: http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/
