The desktop is pretty cool I think. I like the search window that opens up when you hit the top button, nice degree of transparency to it. I also tried the Ubuntu software thingy, looking for Wine. I got as far as the wine homepage and that's where I got lost. lol

You should be able to find it in the package manager. Make sure you update the packages.

I had to install the package manager. It lists some 38 thousand packages, 1000 of which are installed. I have no idea what I'm lookin' at.

I installed a couple of things. I dl'd Docky and Conky but how to install them. They don't use .exe's

that's not how it works. forget what you downloaded. it's probably the source code, and i do not think you are able to compile anything.

if you can not find the apps in the software center (you should), then just open a terminal and enter:

sudo apt-get install conky

(for conky)

or

sudo apt-get install docky

(for docky)

i am not sure conky is the right thing for you to start. maybe find a nice gtk and window manager theme first.

conky is the sort of the linux rainmeter but not quite as customizable. I messed with it but it's a bitch installing skins (worse than rainmeter). I got rid of it.

You should be able to 'search' in the package manager to find Wine. They aren't 'exe' like Windows. The 'packages' have different extensions depending on the version of linux you are using. (Most of the ones for MacPup have the '.pet' extension.) When you download it, Ubuntu should give you the option of saving or 'unpacking' (which is un-zipping) to a folder. I have avoided the stuff that I HAVE to unpack because a few times I couldn't find it and when I did, I didn't know how the hell to install it after it was unpacked.

The biggest problem I have with Macpup/linux/ubuntu is the lack of info for noobs. Like that 'code' moshi posted above..it won't work in all versions of linux, he didn't tell you where to enter it, etc (nothing against moshi) but it's all kind of intimidating because if you know ANYthing about computers, you know how easy it is to screw up your OS when it comes to RUN commands and stuff.

Here is a link that explains how to add the WINE repository so you can download and install it. Personally, I have had more fun looking for alternatives to the WIndows programs I want. Isn't that the point of using ubuntu, anyway?

Okay.....I opened the link and it tells me to open the software center which I did. Then it tells me to open Edit>Software sources. There is no edit>software sources let alone other software. It can't be me all the time.

I'm guessing versions have changed since the post. I run into that a lot. It sucks.

Is there an option or tab to add repository?

Here is a link specific to adding WINE to your version of ubuntu.

You may need to look at the individual WINE releases and compare them to what it is you are trying to install. Sometimes one is not compatible with the other.

 i did. in a terminal (doesn't matter which one) i'm not so fluent in English, but i think in Windows-speak you say console.

if you have a little experience with computers, there is nothing intimidating.

sudo is for getting super-user (administrator) rights.

apt-get is the application you want to run.

install docky are the commandline arguments.

pretty much the same thing as in Windows, except Windows does not have such a comfortable way to install stuff.

for Ubuntu 12.04 wine should already be in the software repository. did you search for wine in the software center at all? else:

sudo apt-get install wine1.3

There will be no exe files in Ubuntu, Ross. Things are installed via terminal (command prompt).

I think I got wine 1.5 installed but now there's a terminal open that says package configuration. It says its configuring ms-corefonts-installer. Its been up there awhile and if I try to close it it says I'll kill the process that's ongoing but there doesn't seem to be anything happening.

I have to switch back over to windows because photobucket refuses to work with ubuntu! A little window comes up saying applying changes but nothing is happening while it...waits for apt-get to close. WTF is this thing doing?

And how do I get the 'packages' I installed on my screen so I can use them?

Will you turn that thing off and go buy a fuckin' dog to play with?????
