Winstep Xtreme for half price ($19.95)

Saturday, May 5, 2012 by Starcandy | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

For one day only, ladies and germs, you can grab the fantastic Winstep Xtreme suite of software for a mere $19.95 over at BitsDuJour. I personally can't recommend it enough, and snapped it up for both my partner and I when it was on there last year. We've both been more than happy with it.

Grab it while you can!

Great find, Starcandy! I keep forgetting to look there.

I absolutely agree with you about about Winstep Xtreme...

It also has the 'plus' of the weather module using METAR code so it has remained functional through all the weather service changes of service and fees.

Only twelve more hours to go on this promotion. Get it from BitsDuJour while it's still hot!

More information regarding Winstep Xtreme can be found HERE and a quick peek at what's new in v12.2 is also strongly recommended.

JC !! Is the "Skinning software" included, or even made yet ??

Not yet, still working on it. Not that this stops some people (e.g.; Xiandi ) from skinning it, who simply edit the configuration files manually (as it has to be done with 99.9% of skinnable software out there). Hardcore skinners will be... hardcore skinners.

But make sure you wait to read that till after you make your purchase because it's pretty much like reading a novel...and you'll miss the sale.

I paid full price for it and do not regret it at all. The second year I had it and will continue to purchase it.

I used this a while back and just need to renew my subscription.  I'm using the trial version in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview at the moment and I think it's the solution to the Metro UI that I find unusable.  Perhaps there will be another sale later this year when "8" is release (hint) and I'll buy the 5 user network license.

Absolutely, JC. Fantastic software... and the skinning module might just happen. You never know!

Hey... old timers will still remember the mythical 'Nexus dock' saga... it took some time, but I always keep my promises. And look at it go now!

I don't think I know the Mythical Nexus Dock Saga.

It took Jorge quite a bit to do the Nexus Dock. Some called it "Mythical" because they were convinced it would never happen... sort of like Zubaz, Smedley and "Roan". There were "Nexus" sightings, too... much like "Nessy" or "The Yetti".

I seem to remember "updates" and MS changing OS and something else (was it moving?) and you were working on 2 other apps as well....  You got it done (very eventually)... more "Mystical" than "Mythical".

But don't quote me.

Just for fun:

Well, the very first Winstep application was NextSTART, back in 1999, a time when WB was still in beta and hadn't even reached version 1.0. Sometime later Winstep also released WorkShelf, which, back then, was just the Shelf (tabbed dock) plus the desktop modules.

An independent dock application, which would be called Nexus, was planned from the beginning, but I ended up taking a very looooong time to actually start working on it.

So 'Nexus' kind of became synonymous to 'vaporware', and I think most old timers eventually lost hope it would ever get done... until I got out of bed one morning and actually started working on it. Then it grew in leaps and bounds.

Because the dock and the Shelf were so closely tied together, at first Nexus only existed as a part of WorkShelf/Winstep Xtreme. Then I split it and made a free stand-alone version, which had to be pretty good and have some unique stuff if I wanted it to have a fighting chance against the currently established docks. Nexus was the first Windows dock to feature live icon reflections, for example.

As far as I know, the only docks still in active development at this point are Nexus and ObjectDock. Both backed by commercial companies - all the other free docks are dead or in limbo, and have been for quite some time. There is a lesson in there for all those who think all software should be free.

There are apps out there that aren't worth powder enough to blow them side ways both free and not so free. Then there are those that are as good as the description says...again both free and not so free. Don't get me wrong I like freebies but.....when you're looking for something specific such as docks and whatnot shelling out a few bucks is worth it because of the tech support, free upgrades, discounts etc etc. That and you get to rag on the devs. Ain't life grand. lol
