Any mechanics in the house??

Real .. ones?

Wednesday, May 2, 2012 by vStyler | Discussion: Community

Having an issue with my 89 camry, something to do with the drive train.

If anyone knows what the hell they are doing I would love some interaction... losing my mind.

I've taken it to 3 diff. mechanics and heard 3 different diagnosis'

Pipe up if you think you may be able to help me, and I'll explain the issue.

Thanks in advance...

Quoting DrJBHL, reply 2Excellent suggestion.

wise words from the doc......

Git 'er fixed....

The "auto doc" graphic in Syd's post gave me an idea:

Maybe decreasing the cost, while increasing the likelihood of finding the source of the problem will come from locating the source of the sound as precisely as John can.

To do that, a mechanic's stethoscope might be in order:

https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=mechanic's+stethoscope#q=mechanic's+stethoscope&hl=en&prmd=imvns&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=L7-jT6-VLo-40QH7x-3ICQ&ved=0CNkBEK0E&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=88ee5c93dfdbc558&biw=1920&bih=955

Just a thought....

2. If only he had that luxury. Getting rid of the car is not an option. John also just had the engine rebuilt from the ground up.

Some people simply cannot afford what others can afford.

There comes a time when 'economy' means letting go of the 'lemon'.

If a car needed a full engine rebuild it's god's way of saying 'time to move on'.

....and it's cheaper.

I have NEVER owned a new car.....and the best condition/quality/youngest of them all was/is the current one.

Has all the bells and whistles.... 5 star ANCAP [without airbags] and cost 3 grand ..... less than a lot of cars' 'full engine rebuilds'...

1. Drive North about 4 or 5 hundred miles where there are some good mechanics. Not just 80 year old retired Flordia mechanics trying to remember what they use to know.

2. Bite the bullet and take it to a dealer to find out what is wrong with it. Ince you are totally sure of the problem you can always go to a smaller machanic to have it fixed at a better price.

3. I can understand sometimes there are sentimental reasons for keeping things. If there isn't really one as someone else said get rid of the damn thing and drive one that lets say is only 15 years old instead of 23. If there is a sentimental reason for keeping it, wrap it in plastic so you can look at it everyday and still get a car that will run without having to ware ear plugs,

I don't think you understand Dave, he cannot afford another car. He also could not afford to get his car fixed even if he did know what the problem is. It is costing him money he does not have just to even track down what the problem is. Buying another car is not an option at all. He has another vehicle, but it eats gas like crazy and needs new tires as there is thread showing on them. Again, he cannot afford new tires even.

He is just trying with the least expense to try and figure the problem out, and he is probably going to be really pissed at me for saying these things as he asked me not to, but I am just stating the facts.

Hi John my friend!

He had the rebuild of the engine done for a LOT less than 3 grand Jafo. Another car is not an option as I said, even a $500 car is out of the question.

John, why are you buying petrol guzzlers when you have no income other than your master skins?

(this is vampothika btw )

you should really do yourself a favour and buy the smallest car you can (3 cylenders if you must)

you will save on petrol.

i know its a bit late to tell you this now.... but cars DO cost a lot of bloody money, especially when you have none.

and the trouble with old cars, in the end your going to have to replace EVERYTHING...its happening now im afraid.

if public transport is available, id be selling the car on ebay and cut your losses

He had the van way before the car Kitty, it was all he could afford at the time. He bought the Camry finally because it used less fuel, but then it broke down over a year ago and he is just now trying to get it working again. But being forced to move to a higher rent home recently ... well, you get the story.

P.S.  I don't think we have 3 cylinder cars here.

The "auto doc" graphic in Syd's post gave me an idea:

was merely giving the thread a 'light' bump..... interesting what you came up with from it doc...

I think the OP was fairly succinct.... if a new car was on the cards.... the thread would be about which best new car to buy.... but, it's not...

It's a country area.... no public transport.... so, car is a must...

Unless you count the Geo Metro/G10....... hmmm....  that name is similar to a much more modern half-assed idea.

I have other income than that, and I am not the only one working, this thread really has nothing to do with what your talking about.

Besides.. its a 2.0 4cyl. engine that is very very good on gas mileage... I only paid 500 bucks for it.

Why would i sell my car? lol... there is no public trans. here.

I also have a Grand Voyager Van. Would rather just be driving something better on gas.

@Jafo, The engine has been rebuilt, inexpensively and other than this issue, its in excellent condition. less than 100k on it, for this particular car, that's not much at all. Hardly a lemon.

Does it happen/change under cornering loads... No

....applying the brake... No.

....same speed but different gears...Same.

Anyway, this thread got a little OT... Me and a friend are going to put it on jacks tomorrow, and get under it with a stethoscope, like doc mentioned and look at the places that Carguy suggested to me on the phone.

Thx everyone.

John, keep in mind that you will be taking the load off the wheel bearings with the car on jacks and the weight off of them, so bearing noise would be less noticeable.

Also, be sure to support the lower control arms to keep the axles as straight as you can when running the car on jacks. If you run it with the wheels hanging too far you could damage your CV joints.

Put simply you should never run a car on jacks.

People die doing that....

You should run the car on the ground on wheel rollers in a garage to be safe John.  One that has a pit underneath it so you can locate the problem. That is the ONLY safe way.  Maybe a garage in the area would be nice and let you use it? Although I doubt it, there are hardly any kind people left in the world like that.

Yes, they do.

I had a good friend who was killed when the concrete blocks supporting a car he was working on crumbled. Use high quality jack stands

(in a pinch, railroad ties make good supports, cut to a useable length.)

and please, be careful. Don't stick anything completely under the vehicle that you can't afford to lose. You've got a WB to finish.

That plus the (low cost) car stethoscope should locate the problem... fixing it might be another story...

Ok will keep that in mind, wont do it for long and I wont be the one under it.. lol.. but I dont have access to a lift\pit so basically this is only option.

We do have a stethoscope and jack stands.

Thx all.
