finding information

I mean, I have never skinned before but I want to try some things of my own (I am particularly interested in UIS1 skins).
But I realy cannot find a way to start. I’ve looked at windowblinds.net but the tutorials are all “coming soon” for some time now, or just not there at all.
I know that’s what the newsgroups are for, but before you can go and ask some meaningful questions you need some kind of basic knowledge right? Besides, having to post a question every time you want to know something and wait until someone posts a reply is certainly not my idea of efficient work.
Does anyone know of a good starting point, a tutorial, a reference guide, anything...?
