I don't know about demos, but there is a modified version of MAX aimed at game developers. It's call GMAX. The interface is pretty much the same as that of regular MAX, so it might work as a demo. Not sure about which formats it works with, though. Since it's free, I supposed it has several features disabled. You can check it out at: http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/gmax_index.html
I'm not sure what the license agreement is, but it might work for you.

The links and software referred by Sexjunkie are for p2p filesharing programs. Chances are you will be downloading an illegal full version of Discreets software. If a "demo" is truly what you seek, go to discreets website and sign up to have the demo CD shipped to you.
