LCD Flat Monitor

I just ordered a Sony Trinitron 18" Flat Panel LCD Monitor. The specs say that it is maxed at 24 bit color display. Does anyone know if it will display icons correctly in WinXP?

Thanks for the info. DavidK Only thing though is all my computer hardware is white/beige and the monitor only came in black. Oh well

David, isn't 32 bits the same as 24 bits plus 8 bits alpha channel, meaning that 32 bits is useless in versions prior to XP. But will 24 bits color display icon transparency correctly under XP?

A monitor can never display alpha, after all, you can't see through the screen, can you? So 24 bits is fine. ANd a black screen is fine too. My two gripes about flat screens (which are TFT, not LCD) is that they have such a low resolution and that they are so damn expensive. What's your resolution? 1024x768?

But the display properties is also related to te screen, I believe. You might have the best video card in the World, most TFT flat screens won't go higher than 1024 resolution. So I was wondering if the video properties of the flat screens, since it's limited to 24 bits, won't display the 8 bits of transparency that you get with 32 bits.
But on second thought, maybe when you are running 24 bits under XP, yo really only get 16 bits + 8 bits alpha?

I'd have to live with one for a while before deciding it would be right for me. 1280 has been too cramped since I got a notebook that displays at 1600 x 1200. Plus it can be hard to calibrate an LCD for CMYK output. But it must be a dazzling display. I think the black case is a plus, no matter what color the rest of your gear is. The white bezel around monitors has always bugged me. Should be quite nice....

Yeah, black casings are much better than this crappy greyish I see everywhere. Flat panel screens are much sleeker at any rate.

- So on a 24 bit screen in XP (mine is this too) does it give you 16bit color and 8 bit trans, 24 bit color and no trans or do both and convert whatever the transwould look like into 24 bit before displaying on the screen?

All images look great, icons, alpha blending, all. The monitor manual says 24 bit color but display properties says 32 bit color. Anyway I'm happy with the monitor.

24 bit and 32 bit are the same as far as how many colors it displays.
