Warning about nVidia GPU Verde Driver 295.73

Thursday, February 23, 2012 by Scrofulous1 | Discussion: Personal Computing

Last night I installed the latest (non-beta) driver release from nVidia, having received a notice from their auto-update system that a new driver was available.

I installed it on an Asus laptop, with nVidia 240M GPU, Vista 32 bit.

On reboot, my screen went black and stayed that way.

Checking the internet (on another computer) I see that happened to a lot of people, including many platforms up to Win 7 64 bit.

A system restore from Safe Mode did not fix the problem. Still black screen.

But still in Safe Mode, I used the "roll back" driver feature in Device Manager to get back to my previous working driver release.

If anyone else experiences this problem, and wants more detailed instructions feel free to PM me.

For future reference, nVidia places a folder in C:/ which will contain the past versions of it's driver so you can roll back easily. Mine currently has 3 versions in it.

Actually, I have the new driver update. When I install new drivers for Nvidia, I opt for the clean install. This removes the old drivers before the new one is installed, thus eliminating the issue of driver conflict or incompatability glitches. The new driver seems to be working fantastic for me so far. I have not experienced any problems and it seems that actually I'm getting much better performance. It's only been 1 day so far, but things still seem good for me. I'll post if I have any issues  later on down the road, but I probably should have noticed something by now. I have the Nvidia 9600GT card in my rig. Could just be a card issue with some PC's.     --Ace--

No problems with the new driver here either. Running dual nVidia GEFORCE GTS 250's on Windows XP 32bit, and also on Vista and Win7 64bit. I do the clean install also.

I haven't yet seen any trend on the machines reporting the error. I've seen laptops and desktops, various GPU's, 32 and 64 bit.

I initially did the upgrade, and the process failed as described. I then rolled back, and reinstalled the new drivers using the clean install.

That too failed, for me.

It is good to know that the problem isn't universal though.

I have nVidia on just the one machine so I'll wait a bit and see if there is a new version or better knowledge on the problem.

NO problems with new driver.  It did boost my frame rate in Shyrim.  Nice.

I am hesitant to install these new drivers, after the last drivers were bad and had problems with Stronghold Kingdoms.

No problems here with the new drivers.  They didn't even ask for a reboot after they were finished.

I do this too, I'd recommend it.

Don't be confused though, Scrofulous1, what I said in the first reply still works, even if you do a clean install.

The last 3 versions (installers) are in my C:\NVIDIA.

Yes, thanks.

I did not mean to imply that the way I restored my old drivers was the only method. My Alienware has 7 sets of drivers in the nVidia folder, and I stopped using nVidia on that machine a year ago.

Time to do some housekeeping!

I did a roll back this morning after getting an error. After restart, I get the same error and am running in safe mode. I could only catch a glimpse of the bubble before it was colored over, screen flashed, and eventually blue screened. I am running Windows 7 64-bit and have a Geforce GTS 450 with the 285.62 driver at the moment. What should I do next? Thanks in advance guys.
