deviantART removed from community sidebar links?

Tuesday, November 6, 2001 by arc | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Is there any particular reason why deviantART is no longer in the left hand table of community links?

I'm aware that it still exists in the links directory, but only a few days ago it was in the Community table and has since been removed.

how about some kind of specially "Designed Graphic" that serves as a Place holder? and lays "Consistent & features the top 5 sites w/i it?
that way they get that eye appeal which catches the visitors eyes and actually get clicked on (Which is the original purpose)
this is a graphic site right?

something maybe Alex can make place holder design up?

hmmm maybe the box can say "Community" on top and have five little residential houses lined up (Done up in good taste of course)
and on the doors of the houses are the top five links shown instead of the address....

okeee well maybe that example is too cutsey for the guys but I think it would look good if done up right? =/

then you have:
1. Control over the image. (unlike button links)

2. Something that catches the eyes of the visitors and actually gets clicked on and helps divert some traffic

3. Makes it easier cuz then you can just change the links each mo on the place holder.

well I'm alil bored this morning waiting for my work... hehe

How much more of a load would it be for WC if those links were changed more often? Say Daily or weekly instead of monthly?

paxx's suggestion is an excellent one. Buttons do attract more attention than simple text links.

Thanks to the system patch, people are working diligently to ensure that Microsoft gets a foothold in GUI skinning.

As a member of the cummunity: I agree with paxx, I think all the major skins sites should have a link button to the others, independently of their creativity, since they use to have their logos on them.
Those sites are the ones who care about our cummunity.

As a Pixtudio's memeber: I'm flatered and honnored to have our site linked on the first page of WC , but at the same time, I don't think it's fair, since Pixtudio is not a cummunity and just a personal site. Being very honest, I'd rather see DeviantART linked there instead of Pixtudio.

We didn't choose Pixtudio. The script did. But we can take Pixtudio out of the pool and re-run the script. HOwever, I personally think Pixtudio is as much part of the community as any other site. Anyone who makes skins is part of the community. Moreover, the community news service, DailyRotation is in the top 5 referring sites. What would you have us say to them?

The truth is, they're all community sites.

Guys, no human was involved in the selection of the 5 links on the left. We only want to have 5 links on the home page. So we pick 5 sites in the community and we try to pick them as fair as possible. That's why it was taken out of the hands of human beings.

i just wonder how you can call WC a part of the community if you are not willing to link to the top sites within the community, just like the other top sites do.

maybe you are trying to tell us something else?

I agree with paxx and treetog. I think this whole link thing is causing an unnecessary rift in the community for no apparently good reason.

The only sites (IMHO) that should be listed are true multi-skin databases. Those are the crux of the community. When deskmod and skinz are revived then they should join the ranks of the community "list". If you want to reward referral sites then put in a separate section for that. I dont really think a few more lines of text will kill the site loading time. To make this a true community you have to have that "web-ring" thing going on, which is not happening and actually quite the opposite is going on. Honestly i dont even think Stardock should be listed there. It's not a skin archive. There are plenty of places to put Stardock's brand here. Leave the community section for the skin sites.

speaking of pixtudio, which has all my respect by the way, are you not linking to them twice? first in the so-called "community" box on the left and then yet again in the aptly titled "WinCust Suites" box on the right?

looks rather similar to me, though i might be mistaken.
