Microsoft screws up again!
Sunday, October 9, 2011 by JuniorCrooks | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
"The Windows Live Gallery has been retired. In order to focus support on the much richer set of opportunities available for the newest version of Windows, Microsoft is no longer supporting development or uploading of new Gadgets. However, some of the most popular and highest-rated gadgets are still available on the Gadgets page of the Windows Personalization Gallery."
So now it appears I cannot even get some of my favorite gadgets. Yes maybe they are out there somewhere but now we have to spend a lot more time searching for them instead of just clicking on get more gadgets.

Jr.,
Where did you get them other than the site you posted?
Reply #3 Sunday, October 9, 2011 10:30 AM
winstar you use to be able to right click on your desktop and choose gadgets and click on get more gadgets. That would take you to a page where you could chose and even search for a wide selection of gadgets. Now all you have to choose from is about 20 or the most popular gadgets (Popular according to MS).
In their on words as you can see they have done away with that because of Windows 8.

So much for backward compatibility. Windows 8 is shaping up to be an epic FAIL in my book. Windows H8, or "The OS for people who know how to use a phone, but not a computer."
Fortunately, I have all my favorite gadgets backed up, along with about 600 more.

It seems Microsoft is heading in directions many will not want to follow. While early news regarding Win 8 seemed encouraging, the recent preview was disappointing and rather ugly, according to most.
I'm usually queuing up for the 1st public beta of a new OS, but in the case of Win 8 I'm not at all enthused. Unless MS has a major rethink about making Metro the default UI I'm unlikely to want to purchase their new offering... because having to hack the registry to enable a regular desktop is not my idea of a good start to a new [OS] relationship.
As for MS Gadgets, well I never use them, but this ruthless abandonment makes me somewhat nervous as to what else MS might decide it will no longer support. While XP is dated, over the hill and should die a natural death anyhow, Win 7 is relatively new and I would hate to be forced into Win 8 because MS has decided cancel support for previous versions to focus on supporting Win 8.
I thought is was good that MS had a web page for people to make suggestions during the development of Win 7... and that MS actually listened and implemented a number of feature suggestions. It seems, though, with Win 8, MS has reverted back to telling us what we want/need... and that is a step in the wrong direction if it wishes to claw back reputation and market share from Apple.
While yuppies, the now generation and 'app junkies' may be early adopters of this Metro train wreck, the majority will avoid it like the plague and it'll be an epic fail.

I still use gadgets from time to time starkers and it pisses me off that MS can just do whatever it wants with little regard for its customers. We are the ones who made MS wealthy. Its not to much to ask to be able to download gadgets that people have worked hard at to make. I noticed you can still access the gadget galleries in a round about way but downloads are blocked.
Here are 2 clock gadgets i would like to have if anyone has them in their collection http://vista.gallery.microsoft.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=86dc76c3-3219-4e02-b545-f0d118fb57f8&bt=1&pl=1

I have no real use of MS gadgets because the ones i need/use are incorporated in the Winstep suite of apps, but I can surely see where you're coming from. The fact that MS is willing to abandon the default desktop everyone is accustomed to says it all for me. Change is one thing, but a complete abandonment of all we are familiar with in a desktop is another. This train wreck named Metro belongs on a mobile phone.. not a PC, and I'll be buggered if I'm going to embrace it.. or be forced into using it.
Anyhow, JC, all the best with your gadget search. I hope you find those you're seeking.

I prefer using the DX gadgets but I can see where you're coming from JC. To take away something a person is comfortable and familiar with is sucky at best. Looks like Microstuff is at it again!

@ JC.I have to be away from the computer this morning but I'll look for your clocks in my collection when I return home.
I use Winstep and DX but there are still some sidebar gadgets that have no equal in either of those programs. A lot of people put time and effort into learning how to make these gadgets and share them with everyone and now MS wants to sweep them under the rug. Shame on you, MS!![]()
I agree with starkers, who and what else are they willing to axe in the name of "progress"?

Shit!!! That's the second time that's happened this month... would you believe year?
How about decade?
Orright, twice in a lifetime it is.... and I've bookmarked this thread so I can remember when and where it happened.

Microsoft in this case is doing what just about every other developer, maker, manufacture or provider of a product or services does. Trying to add to or generate a new customer base. 'Have you seen our new look?' or 'We have made some changes that we are sure you will like' happen each and every day. Why on earth do new models of cars come out each year, because they are better, more efficient, safer, not likely. They just want you to always be making a car payment.

Jr. thanks for the update. I found this site with a nice Gadgets Gallery (at least more extensive than the one on the MS site).

I don't like 8 I don't need a phone app on my PC and as a default to boot. cause according to MS all Monitors will be touch screen very soon 2 to 3 years ... sorry to say a touch screen is not for a desk top PC well for me any way ... EX. I don't want to have to hold my arm up all the time to us my PC or have to modify my Desk to put a touch screen flat so I could us it
this site is not the place to pirate an app... you would need to get in touch with Omer some how. or I see you can make them..

DC, Junior hasn't pirated anything. Why not just let the mods handle this? Edit: There is nothing to handle. There has been no piracy, Junior hasn't asked for anything improper.
What is bugging you, man?
This is the kind of public statement that causes people to leave and causes discord in the forums.
Reply #19 Monday, October 10, 2011 6:02 PM
First off, it's not pirating when they were free downloads and are not being publicly redistributed. I highly resent the accusation, which if you felt that way should have been handled by a Moderator or Admin. You are NOT the forum police, DC.
The old gallery is gone and no way left to contact any of the makers. Imagine if WinCustomize decided to purge all the galleries here of ALL content from the XP era and before.(YAY!) There are a lot of skinners that have changed nicks or moved on with no way to contact them. Would it be pirating to share for personal use only something from your personal collection? (as long as they were not paid or Master skins)
I think not.
What I do think.....I think you owe JC an apology
Reply #20 Monday, October 10, 2011 6:05 PM
DC, what has been done here is no different than if you were to give someone a link to one of my free skins.
No one has stolen anything here, no one has asked for any paid app for free. No one has claimed ownership of anything.
Where do you get that piracy is happening?
