Answers about the Moderation Process

Tuesday, August 16, 2011 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

We have been receiving some questions about moderation from both new and established users.  I wanted to take a few moments to answer some of the common questions, and give you a chance to ask questions that I will answer in a later post.

Why was my skin approved later than others, even though I submitted before them?

Skins are not moderated in order of their submission.  Once a skin is uploaded it is placed in a moderation gallery to be looked at by the moderators.  Some skins take longer for a variety of reasons such as waiting to receive more opinions on the skin, or to verify a permission, etc.  We try to get skins through as fast as possible, but we have a limited staff, and although they do phenomenal work, only so much can be done at a time.

Where is my wallpaper, it was approved but not in the gallery?

It is more than likely in your personal gallery.  WinCustomize is a moderated gallery and not all submissions are placed into the public gallery.  Please see the upload guidelines for more information.

Why is the rating lower now than when it was approved?

Moderators put through an initial rating, but once it is in the public galleries any user can then rate skins.

What can I do to up the chances of my wallpaper making it into the public gallery?

There is not a single solution I can recommend, but some tips can help.  First, focus on quality not quantity.  Uploading wallpapers just to get more downloads will actually increase your chances of not being made public.  Be unique, take your time, solicit feedback from peers, and just enjoy what you are doing.

If you have any questions you would like answered about moderation, please leave them in the comments and I will make another post soon answering as much as I can.

I understand That and have in the past posted. But I have been offline for about a year. I didn't ask for a Pulitzer just a view in the gallery! I sometimes when looking back see mistakes and when time permits I edit. But this is mainly concerning concerning a recent work which is done by a highly rated 3d sculpting artist! And it is a Logon displaying his work All the FEEDBACK I get is great! I never feel bad about advice or suggestions to improve a piece but you don't seem to have read & understood my point. I still don't SEE a second opinion alternitive here or recourse to a bad rating. If something might not make it in the gallery shouldn't a moderator get a second opinion before maybe mistakenly  putting a work in pergatory. And still no one has answered my other question does getting more stars get your work upgraded to the Gallery? Ehere it can be me readily viewed & used. I am not interested in downloads just that it gets exposure so others can decide fairly. By the way I have been here since 2006 & I think I know by now not to upload junk.

IIRC, the wallpaper gallery is moderated by a team of three or more, so each wall actually has many "second opinions" . If a wall goes to ones personal gallery or is rejected outright, the recourse has always been to PM the Moderator(s) and ask what can be done to improve the submission to achieve a better evaluation.

Three mods (at least) and two (or more) admins can approve/reject anything in the wallpaper gallery, actually.

Majority vote counts - and stands.

No such thing as a 'second opinion'.

WHO are the Moderators concerning this??? So I can find out if you could help me with this. I have made comments before on certain works and then they were put in the gallery but I never knew who viewed the comment!

It was good enough to to be in the gallery here. I will have other pics to support my contention as they are approved

Not 100% true. All gallery mods can rate "vote on" wallpapers so at times there are as many as 7 or 8 votes on a specific item. The minimum is 3.

Fixed. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks Lantec at least I'm getting some new INFO to me from someone!   How many actually did vote? That would be interesting to know.

If the work is so bad to only get a HALF Star then why was the wall given 2-  and one half stars??? It is the same wall and is not distracted by the user icon!  mate Ckeck out link!

I know what you are gonna say already! This is what I don't want. I just wanted to have it reviewed and considering the support and comments and being featured. I think you can see I am getting others opinions in favor of it.

A soapbox for asking the public for an appraisal of your work is not the intent of this thread. These things never fly straight. They seldom go in the desired direction.

The Wallpaper gallery and Logon Gallery are two different things entirely.

A wall may be approved just fine but the exact same image is rejected as a logon...typically because logons really 'should' have some relevance to an Operating system .... although that doesn't always apply.  It certainly was more clear/made more sense when logons actually REQUIRED skinning, and weren't just some meaningless wall plonked into more than one category.

When it comes to deciding what is accepted and what is not....the Mods' decision is final.  They manage the galleries on behalf of the site owner [Stardock].  If anyone at all is adamant theirs MUST be accepted they are always free to host their images themselves on their own site.

If anyone is 'curious' about why something didn't make it into a gallery they are free to PM me [only...not in public].... but please come forward with a thick skin.  If I think something is 'crap' I will say so, but you will also get a 'why' which invariably people will disagree with....- they often do.

A decade ago I 'culled' the wall gallery from 700 to 400 without much effort on my part [other than it was done on dial-up] and even then could have been MORE critical and probably been left with 200.

....those 400/200 would have been at a standard/style that Stardock deemed acceptable.  The difference today is the percentage is likely not much different....good vs not so good ... but the numbers are bigger.

When it comes to Logons ....particularly the Vista/7 variety....I think I could easily cull 90% and have a semi-OK collection.

One more thing...specific to this logon.   If it were your OWN artwork and not someone else's.... [even with permission] it just might have been approved....but where is "the skill" or "art" or "skinning" - even in grabbing someone else's image and uploading it as 'whatever'?

ANYONE could simply grab any wall image and plonk it in on their computer as a

logon....or a wall...or anything else....why even need a third party?

Indeed. I find it frustrating to not be able to award less than ½ star

To be perfectly honest about the image that was uploaded, after reading the description by the uploader, I was very irritated by the fact that it was actually created by someone else and being uploaded here by his "buddy?" I mean really....what is this.....his personal promotional/marketing department ??  It just didn't seem genuine to me , thus I simply clicked off the page.          -- Ace --

As I posted in your accompanying walls comments section..

Not every logon with a matching wall, will get accepted even if it's counter part is, and vice versa..

This wall, I voted for particularly because I felt it would be a an interesting Halloween type of wall, But any other time I would have voted against, not due to lack of quality, but originality.

You must realize that we are regularly bombarded with anime,manga,cartoon,Game-characture types of wallpapers and logons, so unless it make me yell "OMGWTFBBQPUDDING!!! I got to have that". it's not often I give a thumbs up..

As for the logon, again originality comes in to play, again the Game-characture'ish type of image as well as it not being totaly of your own making weighes heavily,in the virdict.  With fewer mod's voting in this que the outcome can often be different than it's wall counterpart.

One must keep in mind the Mods selected for each Que have abundant experience in that particular area and we stand by their decisions.

Please remember, Mod's are Masters too. The works uploaded to the ques for moderation are not being judged by some inexperienced new comer..

Thanks... HG

recently we had a case of many accessories being uploaded for the same blind and someone wondering why others were appearing in the gallery before theirs...

it turns out they were unaware that journeymen & masters have their submissions uploaded straight into the gallery... so it kinda looked like they were being left behind, 'til explained...

You know when I first started tough moderation was hard to swallow,.....

I remember having a windowblind rejected (from a certain very logical individual) because........ New skinners pay close attention........

There wre old unused wb4 block files from my previous skin and a couple unused graphics

I was told "If (insert a very logical mod) moderates your WB it better be correct with no unsed data or parts cause he will open the WB folder and check all the contents!"

I remember thinking well basically ERRRRRRRR......

  HOWEVER

I cleaned the skin folder (back before there was a clean my skin button in SKS)

My upload went from over 2MB down to less than 1MB I thought WOW...

I have never not cleaned a skin folder ever again ....

Tough Mods = Better Quality

Without Fail Every Time

Thanks for the tough love Fuzzy!

[So that's what that does.  I foresee my WB directory shrinking substantially via the deletion of unneeded substyles and subsequent cleaning. Thanks for that tip. ]
