Friday, August 12, 2011 by theAVMAN | Discussion: Community

Has anyone found a solution for veiwing png , tga , and psd thumbnails in Windows7 64 bit? In XP there was a stable solution through "Power Toys for XP" available through Microsoft downloads center.

I have trieed several 3rd party applications but none have worked correctly or at all for that matter. So I am looking for someone running Win7 64bit that has found a working solution!

  Thank you A/V

Are you looking for something other than Photoshop or Windows Photo Viewer? There lots of ways to view those things Windows 7 64 bit.

If you are talking about thumbnails on your desktop, Mysticthumbs will do it. But I think you have to pay for it.

I use FastStone Image Viewer when looking at thumbnails of pictures. Fast, free and easy to use.

(edit ... Doc is too fast  )

Mystic Thumbs just quite working on my system one day and I found this for $19.95. I am assuming you want to view thumbs for PSD in Explorer? http://www.ardfry.com/Download.htm You would want the PSD Codec. Mystic Thumbs is no longer free and I find the Ardfry Codec more reliable.

Should work... did you download the right version? Did you try rebooting?

Yes, and no. If I read correctly, one installer works for both 32 and 64.  It didn't prompt me to reboot.

And it isn't working? Borked install?

The Ardfry Codec was developed specifically for 64 bit Windows. A lot of the older ones will not work on 64 bit.

1st thank you all very much!

My primary concern is with tga 1st psd second and  is optional as I really very rarely use Photoshop but I always use pngs.

I use a program called Xnview. It lets me view AND manipulate all of those.

It just isn't working. PSDs still just show an icon. Maybe a reinstall will fix it?

I can do that with Irfanview. It would be great to be able to see thumbnails in the native explorer view, rather than having to open the files in an external viewer, like Irfanview.

I always have the 'viewer pane' open...so I see the PSDs there...
