Yeah, it does: Not all "download" sites are equally trustworthy. They can get infected through no fault (or due to careless security) of their own.

The original site is still the most trustworthy. Don't wish to belabor the point, itboe.

Oh, probably I'm not explaining well. Of course the original site is the most trustworthy (although they can get infected as well, especially if the software are some very popular ones; hackers are looking for these kind of  sites..), is obvious.

What I mean is that with some very light, small utility such as Hippo UpdateChecker you can know in few seconds which updates are available..Then, if you like, you can download them from the original sites (sometimes this is what I do..) .

I mean, is something "practical" ..

Personally I think you should only download from the original site (preferred method, since they might have important information, an even newer version and/or are trustworthy) OR from a reputable site like Cnet's Download.com.

And yes, I have seen virus infected files proposing to be cracks for Winstep Xtreme, Nexus Ultimate, etc... Even though it would be poetic justice to let users who download those files get infected, those too get taken down via DMCA notices whenever I run into them.

One thing that DOES bother me personally is how some bloggers, etc..., will go through what seems to be great lengths to upload the free version of Nexus to sites like RapidShare, Megaupload, etc... and then link to that instead of Winstep.net. It makes no sense for free software!

Bloggers who do that are stealing hits from the Nexus listing at Cnet Download.com (hits that help keeping the program at the top of the chart) and readers who come across those blogs end up downloading and running old versions of the software.

Had that problem a long time ago which is why I deal with cnet and original sites only. I go with what I know works.

Although it's getting a bit OT ...

FileHippo, and other sites like it, are on twitter. I get daily messages on software updates and then check them out on the programs original sites.

I do use Secunia PSI which informs about patches for my installed programs, it downloads patches from the programs(sites) file servers.

Winstep was nice enough to notify me itself

Thanks a lot, tazgecko!!     That's what I was trying to say....

OldMsgt, make sure you have "Notify of update" ticked in either "Advanced" or "General" tabs ... that way when you boot, or start Nexus/WinStep, it'll check for updates automatically.
