Been Here, and had this discussion, already.
SpaceGhost, as HoverDesk is a competing application, it has a snowball's, chance of getting on this site. To put it bluntly.

CygnusXII: Then how do you explain the LiteStep and NextStart sections?

I didn't mean to come accross, as rude or mean.
It's hard to express frustration, and similar feeling, via text. I'll let Brad Explain, the particulars again.

Excellent observation Tarkus. Really Admins, how do you explain that as mentioned by Tarkus.

CygnusXII I was just kidding around with you. I knew you weren't being rude.

All of that was discussed in a previous thread.

According to the powers that be, Litestep is ok to list here because it's a free app (i.e., not competeing with Stardock). NextStart is ok to list here because it brings in many users looking for nextStart skins, which in turn introduces them to Stardock apps.

Personally, I feel that Hoverdesk should fall into the same category as NextStart in terms of consideration for listing it here on this site. But it's not going to happen.

I don't see how the fact that something is free disqualifies it as competition. If anything, that makes it *more* competitive.

Last we talked about that, it seemed that neither Litestep nor Nextstart was competition since they can be used in paralel with Stardock apps. While Hoverdesk is directly competing again DesktopX and/or Objectbar.

Not saying I agree, just reporting the last official word about this discussion.

Doesn't NextStart compete with ObjectBar? Mind you, I don't use either one, but from what I understand, they both do similar things.

Briefly, our analsys indicates that having a Hoverdesk section would have a negative impact on the Stardock apps (namely DesktopX and ObjectBar). This is because few people know about Hoverdesk outside the skin community, thus far more people would be introduced to Hoverdesk through this site versus Hoverdesk users being first exposed to other apps.

NeXTStart and Litestep have sections because they've already "made it" (they have a significant community of their own). They bring new users into the skinning community from the outside. We don't believe that Hoverdesk does this.

Example:
It has a small loyal group of users who learned about it from a skin site. In contrast, people hear and learn about Litestep and NeXTStart from a wide variety of sources.

Think of it as a trade balance. Someone might come here because they tried out DesktopX and decide that NeXTStart works better for their particular uses. But a user might also come here because they were using NeXTStart and then decide DesktopX is more what they wanted. An even trade. But we believe that virtually every Hoverdesk user is already well aware of the various skinning programs.

That said, Hoverdesk is a fine application.

hmmm.. that makes sense... NOT! So this totally nuetral site independant of Stardock does not want to promote a fine application? Explain your position in the skinning community again.. I must of missed something?

*sniff sniff* I smell...I smell..I smell bullshit!

I thought this site would host skins for the most popular apps? Not the apps which would least dent your profits by stealing users. Is this true? (although we already know the answer to that one, but I'll humor y'all)
Hmm, let's see then:

Colorpad has 39 skins here. Would we say Colorpad is a prog that has 'made it'? Well, that whole invisible 'community of their own' must be so big that we can't even see it.

Kewlpad has 12 skins here. 12!!!
Man how I'd love to be part of that interesting and diverse Kewlpad community. It too must be comparable in size to the Colorpad community.

Hoverdesk has at the very least 150 skins created for it.
Hoverdesk has a large userbase. Hoverdesk has an irc channel and a forum. There is clearly demand from HvD users for it to be added here.

Anyhoo, I can no longer be arsed with the trifles of soapbox politics which seem to be part of this site on a daily basis.
I've said my piece and I'll be on my merry way.
I'll make sure not to let the door hit my ass as I leave.

Having a bad day, Crumbut?

Thanks for the explanation, Frogboy. I don't necessarily completely agree with you, but I respect your right to do what you think is best for Stardock, since they're footing the bill. Some people think you should be in business to provide charity, but I'm not one of them.

HD v OD is akin to Coke v Pepsi.

Perhaps it WOULD be kewl if the Coke trucks did the Pepsi deliveries too....

[commercial suicide, though]....

Since I prefer Pepsi, I agree that the Coke trucks should carry Pepsi.

Like I always said this site is pro Stardock. It will never be like skinz.org was. This is supposed to be a skinning community website. Turns out to be a Stardock community website.
