Screen Resolution

Tuesday, July 31, 2001 by DaWebMassa | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I used to run at the ever popular 1024x768. Now that I've moved up in the world and purchased a nice large monitor, I'm working on a Solace in Blue DX theme. However, I have a question... Are more of you using 1280x960 or 1280x1024?

1280x960 is the correct ratio, equivalent to 800x600 or 1024x768. But although it distorts slightly the image, a lot of people use 1280x1024.

800x600 and 1024x768 have a 1.33 ratio while 1280x1024 have a 1.25 ratio. So the image is slightly stretched lenghwise. One gets used to it after a while, it not really perceptible.

paxx... that's why I initially went with 1280x960 but then I noticed a lot of themes were created at 1280x1024.

TasT... I know Paul (mormegil) runs at 1600x1200 too... you people must be running a 21" monitor.

And yes, now that I am at the higher resolution at home, I hate coming to work to this teeny 17" monitor.

FoF! Hey, long time no see!

1600x1200 here, both my monitor (Sony GP...err...the new 21" one) and my card are capable of higher resolutions, but my eyes just can't handle anything smaller.

1280x1024 Here as Well, and I wish I had a 21".

I use the 1280x1024, and is good know how many people use this screen size. It's a good orientation before i make new themes, yes. But, i observed the professionals use the higher screen sizes, and users at home, lower (the default screen sizes, i think)

Here is a really scarry thought. Most of my commercial customers are addicted to 800x600 and would never switch to a higher resolution. Ok on a 14 inch or smaller laptop display I can see that, but the 17 inch or larger screens, that is like being attacked by giant icons that rule your screen

1280x1024. Although the other may be the aspect ratio that many are used to, I doubt that many people run at that (just a hunch, of course!). My reasoning is that the extra screen real-estate is much more important in the long run.

hehehe @ Mobius!

Now here's an interesting question... if I create an image running at 1280x1024 and give it to someone running at 1280x960, will the perspective change? Wouldn't then a circle that looks round to me look somewhat distorted to them?

yes the circle would be oblong if they have there display setting to stretch, and if they have it set to center or tile, then will lose part of the image. If it is possible create the image in both aspect ratio's. For example most of the images I make I render to each specific size, so there is no problem with aspect ratios and no resizing. No I do understand that this is not practical for most photo shop or etc creators, but you can always make walls in 1280x1024 then offer then in the other ratio such as 1152x768 this way they get a clean unwarped image, and the 1280x1024 people just get a little bonus material on theirs.

One of the biggest pains in wall-dependent LiteSTEP themes is not just catering for res size changes, but supplying and auto-loading the walls for the various proportional differences....but at least it can be done...

Hmm, having I seen this thread elsewhere? Anyhow, 1280x1024 (17") and 1600x1200+1024x768 (17"+14", all hail Dual Head).

I always thought that 1280x1024 looked better than 1280x960, now I've got a 19" monitor though, I'm much happier in 1600x1200, lots of room to work in.
