Poor Connections On This Site!

Thursday, July 19, 2001 by RastaMan | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Seems as though WinCustomize can't handle the load of users.

Past 2 days all I have gotten while trying to enter the Library is:

------------------------
WinCustomize.com Library
Maximum connections exceeded. Please try back in a few minutes.
------------------------

Being a Network Engineer/server operator, I know all about bandwidth and server limitations. So an hour or 2, understandable.. 2 days worth.. Down right depressing and getting to be a worthless effort.

I've heard of problems getting into the message board, but I haven't experienced it myself.

There's a lot of problems this week with Internic causing thousands of DNS problems, today Q-West has major problems on the west coast (DSL provider)causing most of their customers to be offline, and then there's this worm that's supposed to start in an hour from right now and slow down the internet for most users http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-6616583.html?tag=mn_hd although those things usually don't happen as planned.

Couple problems happening.

1) That worm virus -- targeted skinners. Guess which company is listed in a ton of those people's address books? The server has gotten bombarded by virus emails.

2) The release of DesktopX has caused traffic to skyrocket this week, it should go down in a few days.

How about limiting the access of the site, making it less attractive to those who just download? Say you have to become a member to use the sites services and put a limit on how many skins (or mbs)you may download per month. I think that will reduce the number of non-contributing bandwidth eaters. Is there anyone who agree with me?

No, I'm certain that would be the end of this site.

Already does that now -- after 10 megs of downloading, users have to create an account.
