Cannot load blank theme... or start a new one

Thursday, September 25, 2003 by goodmorphing | Discussion: Stardock Software

I haven't been able to load a blank Destop X theme or start a new one. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no results. I am using the latest beta. Any suggestions?

Delete the 'User'Theme folder in DX folder (User is your name), then try loading a blank...

Thanks.... but it didn't work. I unloaded DX, deleted that folder, reloaded and tried to load a blank one. Then when that didn't work I 'changed to a blank' (which is essentially just unloading DX right now) and tried loading a blank. Also, there is a default theme that frogboy did awhile back, it won't load either.

When you deleted 'folder' and loaded blank, did the desktop icons show?

No, but I don't usually have icons on my desktop. I have object bar, and object fx both configured not to have desktop icons (and sysmetrix too I think).

When you load blank your icons show...it disables your 'hide desktop icons' option. My guess is, if they didn't show, that it's that 'bug' they've been dealing with with iconX. Disable 'IconX' in config and see if it works...

I disabled iconX and tried to load a blank theme with no results (though it still stripped my current theme leaving no icon on my desktop). Then I deleted the 'owner (thats me) theme, and tried loading a blank theme with no results.

Did the last version work for you?

I don't think so. I had been having problems for awhile, but I thought that was because I am a beginner. Do you think I should just uninstall DX, delete it, then reinstall?

I had a copy of the microsoft desktop manager that I dusted off and started using again. It handles virtual desktops a little differently, do you think I should dump it?

well, unloading it didn't help.

It sounds like it...save themes and objects to temp folder, un-install and then delete DX folder completely. Re-boot and re-install (move your saved files back) and re-boot. If this doesn't work I'll send you an older build ...I do archive! Disable the virtual stuff until we get this resolved....

OK. Thanks, yrag. I think I will save this until tomorrow.... right now I feel like I am coming down with a cold or something and all I better do is sleep. I am not thinking real clear.

I will do this first thing in the morning and post the results, OK?

Thanks for always helping. I think you are a computer genious! And a genuine nice guy too.

Well, I uninstalled DX. Saved important lookin folders in a separate folder, deleted DX, defragmented, rebooted and tried to apply DX. No go, so I tried to load a blank theme. I did get the DX icon, no others. I couldnt create a new theme from that, so I tried to load another. None of the themes supplied with DX worked. So I loaded one from the net, and that worked. Then I unloaded that one, copied my saved themes and objects into the new folder and applied my old themes. That worked. Still cannot use a blank theme, nor any other theme included with the new download.

Awhile ago there was this component (was it MCP?) that was downloaded separatly, then later on they included it in the DX download. Could there be a conflict with that?

The MCP core is still installed. Is that only a desktopX component, or could I uninstall it?

do not un-install MCP...it's an integral part of the ObjectDesktop startup. DX, being a beta, could still have problems with some themes...if you can create one...and it works...you're good to go

That is the thing, I cannot create one. I can download one, and I can modify one, but I cannot load a blank theme or make a 'new' theme. Truth be told, they usually update these things so fast ... I could just wait. It will probably work eventually, right?

Thanks.
